More Daylight, More Trouble?
I’m one of those people adversely affected by the seasonal changing of the clocks. How can altering our day by just one hour wreak such internal havoc? And yet, on an emotional level, I greatly enjoy having more natural light in my day — especially in the warmer months.
For years, we were told Daylight Savings Time would help conserve energy. Apparently, analysis has proved otherwise. With the global conversion to energy-saving LED light sources well underway, it would seem to make Daylight Savings Time unnecessary if the goal was to save energy.
As technology and science have evolved, there is now more attention being paid to the effects of natural light and darkness on our circadian rhythms. We asked the professionals at The Light and Health Research Center at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City for their thoughts regarding the recent passage of the Sunshine Protection Act and what it would mean for our circadian rhythms. See our featured story for their answer below, and watch the short video embedded in the story for a deeper dive into the discussion. |
