Corporate Quicksand
I keep a close eye on the residential side of the market, and it was a great shock to many to learn of 70-year-old lighting manufacturer Kenroy Home, the first residential lighting company to become an ESOP, suddenly closing its doors last Friday with no warning — even to its employees.
Sadly, the number of well-known companies disappearing virtually overnight is becoming more common lately. While this is the first instance that a sizable residential lighting manufacturer met this fate, this same type of abrupt shutdown has been taking hold across the home goods sector. Earlier this month, 60-year-old furniture mainstay Klaussner closed without warning, as did 110-year-old beloved brand Lane Furniture last November, and a 91-year-old custom furnishings factory in June. Each instance has the same root cause: financial challenges with their overseas supplier. Those lighting manufacturers who rely on an assortment of overseas factories for production, instead of one source, have fared the best. While container costs have dropped considerably over the past few months, it may not be enough to keep some companies afloat. Most economic forecasts predict better stability in the first quarter of 2024 and beyond. I’m hoping the turmoil subsides and we have fewer “surprises” like Kenroy. What changes are you seeing in the market? Let me know.
