Resilient Lighting Can’t Happen Soon Enough
From devastation caused by Mother Nature flattening entire towns with tornadoes and floods to man-made destruction, such as bomb shelters and buildings damaged by the war in Ukraine, “resilient lighting” is very much needed. And yet, there’s not much discussion about it in the lighting community.
I was unfamiliar with the term until several years ago, when Terry McGowan, Director of Engineering for the American Lighting Association (ALA), brought up the concept in an educational session. “Resilient lighting” goes beyond rugged construction and provides illumination for days and, ideally, weeks.
“Resilient lighting” is not the same as emergency lighting (i.e. stairwell and exit lights that promote evacuation from a building). Resilient lighting needs to operate for a much longer timeframe than for egress. “This is rugged lighting designed to continue operating when other lighting cannot,” Terry explained.
The IES has published ANSI/IES LP-13-21 “Introduction to Resilient Lighting Systems” (available through The IES Webstore) and there is a U.K. standard under the name “Illumination for Continued Activity.”
Part of the larger concept of Resilient Design in buildings, the IES’ Resilient Lighting Systems publication offers guidance on lighting performance and controls, plus outlines the characteristics of lighting equipment required for designated “resilient buildings.”
With all of the attention paid to the recently passed Infrastructure Law, which has allocated funds for investment in smart/connected lighting on a city-wide level, this seems like an ideal time to nudge the Resilient Lighting concept further along and start putting it into design practice. If you are a designer or a manufacturer who has experience with Resilient Lighting products, I’d love to hear from you. |
