Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1 – A Road Map: Section 44
By William (Bill) Burr
Section 44 — Theater Installations
The Code is a comprehensive document. Sometimes it can seem quite daunting to quickly find the information you need. This series of articles provides a guide to help users find their way through this critical document. This is not intended to replace the notes in Appendix B or the explanations of individual requirements contained in the CEC Handbook, but will hopefully provide some help in navigating the Code. These notes are based on the 25th edition. Rule 44-000 Scope – states that Section 44 is a supplementary or amendatory section of the code and applies to electrical equipment and installations in buildings or parts thereof that are used for dramatic, operatic, motion picture or other shows. It should be noted that, because of rapid advances in the theater industry, some rules in this Section may refer to electrical equipment that may be obsolete. The CEC Handbook provides additional notes and diagrams to better explain this Section. Read More |

By Line Goyette
As the head of ABB Canada's electrification business unit, Éric Deschênes is no newcomer to the electrical industry. He has a long track record and a passion for finding practical solutions to optimize technology adoption. We met with him recently to discuss his new role at the helm of ABB Canada and his plans moving forward. He began by pointing out that the recent change to ABB Canada's structure, as elsewhere in the world, was made to make customer relations more straightforward. "The corporate matrix has been streamlined to get closer to the customer," says Eric. Read More |

The 20th Ontario Electrical Safety Report Demonstrates ESA's Continued Commitment to Electrical Safety and Education
The 20th Annual Ontario Electrical Safety Report (OESR) is one of the few documents in the world that compiles and publishes electrical safety data every year. The OESR is the only document of its kind in Canada and is recognized as a standard of rigorous safety reporting offering comprehensive data and analysis that helps Electrical Safety Authority make Ontario a safer place to live, work and play free from electrical harm. Every incident described in the OESR represents a tragic event. The hope is that by publishing the report, ESA can prevent these tragedies in the future. ESA focuses on the risk factors of these events to help drive our efforts to ensure they do not occur again. This information offers a consistent source of reliable data that allows us to focus on reducing the areas with the highest risk. |

August Building Permits: Decreases in Ontario & BC Pull National Results Down Compared to July
The total value of building permits in Canada decreased 2.1% to $9.7 billion in August. Although most provinces reported increases, notable declines in Ontario and British Columbia pulled the national results lower compared with July. On a constant dollar basis (2012=100), the total value of building permits fell 1.3%. Residential permits decreased 8.3% to $6.4 billion in August, the lowest level since March. Ontario and British Columbia drove most of the decline. Construction intentions for multi-family units fell 15.9%, largely reflecting Ontario's decline (-24.3%).
