The Cat Days of Summer
This issue includes both dogs (PFD) and cats (superstitions) so I took some liberties with the well-worn August dog-day weather cliché. However, there truly is a lot of cat and dog action in the boating word currently. At least in the GTA, PWCs are creating quite a stir as bootleg rental companies are circumventing safety to extract large hourly rates renting jet skis to anyone with $150 regardless...

Gelcoat Cleaning
It’s great to put your boat away clean and ready to go for spring. As the busy season starts to wind down, many boaters turn to the maintenance that has been neglected or pushed aside for trips and activities aboard. Why now? If you use a marina or contractor for upkeep, now’s a great time to arrange for some winter work when facilities are more available.

Making the Pilgrimage to the Annapolis Sailboat Show
With 150,000 miles of coastline and over two million lakes, there aren’t all that many reasons for a sailor to leave Canada. Of course, there’s the small matter of the weather. When taking your boat out feels less like leisure and more like an act of defiance, it becomes awfully tempting to make a break for the BVIs.

Not Sure This Was What Charm Diamonds Had in Mind
It was a very nice gesture from Charm Diamonds to build a romantic heart shaped photo op seat at Chester Race Week. However, they might have had a different expectation for the setup – happy amorous couples gazing fondly into each other’s eyes or at least holding hands. Daisy Cobden sent along this shot of the offbeat J120 Helix crew showing their affection for one another with no diamonds in sight. Sweet? Perhaps.

Boat Superstitions
#4 Cats are Good Omens
Cats have been a welcome crew member since the early days of sailing. Trading, exploration and naval ships all made sure to have a ship cat to control the rat population on board. Rats were notorious for gnawing on ropes and wood, stealing food and, later, chewing on wires. Most importantly, they would spread disease to the food and people on the boat. The cat’s role was to hunt, catch and...
