Online Seminars Now Available
For the safety of oneself, the boat’s crew and the boat itself, the boater had best be prepared to take tides and currents into consideration when planning a voyage of any length in tidal waters. Failure to do so can result in the vessel’s running aground or, just as embarrassing and damaging, snapping off a mast in a collision with a bridge or utility cable stretched across a tidal river. It is not possible to cover every detail of the subject of tides and currents within the constraints of this seminar...

CPS-ECP 2022 AGM & Conference
It doesn’t seem too long ago, that we started to plan for our first in-person Conference in over 2 years, but time seems to move sometimes more quickly than we would like. We last met together in beautiful Victoria, BC, and many of us enjoyed so much, not only the events of the Conference itself, but also of the many attractive and interesting places around the area that we could visit. This same enjoyment can be yours when coming to the Toronto Conference this year.

Attention Boaters: Give Whales Space
Watching whales and other marine mammals in their natural surroundings is exciting. It gives us an opportunity to better appreciate these beautiful animals, but if we aren’t cautious, we risk disturbing and even harming marine wildlife (or ourselves). Of note, there are additional protections in place for endangered species.

Sailpast pass complete
Tom Brady couldn’t have thrown a better spiral. This is a shot of my handsome son, Will, carrying out our Sailpast tradition for the first time in three years. And wow, was everyone aboard happy to see it! June is traditionally the month for sailpast. However, I needn’t (and likely shouldn’t) remind you that everything has been locked down for longer than we have been able to stand.

Canada Sail GP earns 2nd in Chicago
Proving that their stand-out podium finish in the Bermuda SailGP event - Canada’s debut event in the class - was no fluke, the Canadian team took two bullets and finished 2nd overall at this weekend’s Sail GP event in Chicago. It was a different affair than the first outing with lighter Great Lakes winds on the Chicago stretch of Lake Michigan. It was likely these light winds that kept Canada from taking top spot overall...

Stay and shroud tension: Not just for sailing performance!
I was recently reading a number of Facebook posts from sailboat owners’ groups, wondering why their cabin doors and cupboards were no longer opening properly. Either rubbing on the door frame or getting stuck in the frame. And this, after a haul out or after launching and stepping the mast. To my horror, some well intentioned comments recommended everything from sanding down the door edges, to cutting a little off the door frame or door edges...

Head games: Troubleshooting marine toilets
A marine toilet is a relatively simple apparatus, straightforward to diagnose and repair. There are a handful of major manufacturers; most have replacement parts and maintenance items available for purchase via marine chandleries. Repair is generally a matter of understanding the system and getting your hands dirty. Marine toilets come in two major types: Manual and electric – but both systems work essentially the same way.
