Sarah Douglas Wins Gold at World Sailing Hempel World Cup
Canada’s 2021 Olympic competitor, Sarah Douglas from Toronto’s Ashbridges Bay YC, won the gold medal in ILCA 6 (Laser Radial) at the World Sailing Hempel World Cup that was held at the 51st Princess Sofia Trophy in Mallorca, Spain, which ended last Friday. This is her first championship title – and podium finish – in a World Sailing event. In the Medal Race, the last event of the week-long competition in ILCA 6, Sarah Douglas finished 6th to officially win the championship title.

Southern Straits Returns April 15-17, 2022
After a two-year COVID-19 hiatus, the West Vancouver Yacht Club will host the 52nd Southern Straits Sailing Race over the Easter weekend, with sailors once again hitting open water to navigate a course crisscrossing the Georgia Strait. The event will feature short, medium and long course races ranging in length from 70 to 145 nautical miles, as sailors will test their skill while racing overnight in tricky spring conditions. There will also be an Inshore Course of approximately 20 miles.

Beneteau First 36.7 NAs in Toronto September 8-11
The Beneteau First 36.7 North American Championship regatta is returning to Toronto’s National Yacht Club for the first time since 2011 on September 8-11, 2022. The fleet will sail up to eleven races through the three-day event on racecourse located on Lake Ontario southwest of the Toronto Islands. The 36.7 fleet has seen a resurgence of new owners who come with a lot of racing experience from other fleets. At any given regatta, there will be a different champion on the podium.

Kingston’s CORK for 2022 – a Packed Season
CORK, the Canadian Olympic training Regatta Kingston, is Canada’s largest annual sailing regatta. CORK was established in 1969 by a group of enthusiastic sailors who knew that Kingston was an ideal location for large international sailing regattas. CORK’s headquarters is at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, site of the 1976 Montreal Olympic sailing events. This year, CORK is excited to host a full events schedule with regattas starting in June and running through to the end of September.

Sail Canada to Hold Cruising Information Session
Wednesday, April 20 at 7pm (ET), Sail Canada will hold an information session for Cruising Instructors and Schools as well as Provincial Sailing Associations to discuss some important information including regulatory changes impacting information that instructors communicate to students, updates to standards and student exams, and changes to the instructor certification system. This session will communicate information about initiatives from Transport Canada and changes for 2022 in Sail Canada programs.

Jacob and Graeme Saunders Launch Dinghy Locker Initiative
Olympians and brothers Jacob and Graeme Saunders have launched the Dinghy Locker initiative, which provides help to sailors in need. “On Deck” conversation with two-time Olympian Jacob Saunders, who hails from Chester, N.S. Congratulations on this new initiative! Could you give us more details about this? The initiative just started recently with a donation from my brother and I to our local junior sailing program, consisting of a pile of lightly used wetsuits and other dinghy sailing gear.

Georgian Bay Regatta Celebrates 36th Anniversary this Summer
Once again, the Georgian Bay Regatta is the sailing event of the summer on Georgian Bay – not to be missed! Now in its 36th year, the GBR will take place on the west side of the Bay, visiting the picturesque ports of Meaford, Lion's Head, and Wiarton, as well as two spectacular anchorages. Six races are planned over four days, including four long distance and two course races. Not only does the GBR attract boats from Georgian Bay, but Lake Simcoe and Lake Huron sailors regularly participate.

Eight Bells
Jon Wilkins – Eight Bells for a World Champion
Jon bought his Thunderbird, Wampum, sail #245, in the mid 70’s. Wampum was professionally built by Richardson Boats Works in Meaford Ontario. At the time, there were three active T-Bird fleets in the western end of Lake Ontario: Whitby, Toronto and Bronte Harbour. The North-East District Championships were held annually with 30 – 35 boats on the line. Jon won this regatta in 1977. In 1981, Jon became the 9th Thunderbird World Champion winning the regatta.

Violet Stafford Joins Ontario Sailing as Training Centre Development Coach
Ontario Sailing is delighted to announce that Violet Stafford has joined their staff as Training Centre Development Coach. Stafford, who most recently served as Lead Performance Coach for the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, brings over six years of experience coaching and developing youth programs on the high-performance pathway. "I'm thrilled to join Ontario Sailing to support the next generation of high-performance sailors in Ontario," Stafford said. "I'm excited to bring my coaching experience and enthusiasm for mentoring coaches and athletes to this new role."

Avoid Laylines and Corners
It’s impossible to round any mark without getting to the layline first. But the big question, both tactically and strategically, is how far you should be from the mark when you reach that layline. There’s a huge difference between making your final approach from three lengths versus 30 lengths. As a general rule, it’s smart to avoid getting to laylines too early. The more time you spend on a layline, the more likely you are to face one or more problems.

Congratulations on your new gig Andrew! How does it feel? You never know when the perfect time is to retire as an athlete. If you do it too early, you may miss out on medals and if you do it too late, then you end your career on a low.
