A Fleet Reborn
Laser 28
News via John Mills. The story is that a few years ago a friend I crewed with bought a Laser 28 and I liked it so much I had to buy one. Then another friend the same, and another. Soon we had five locally and we decided to all get together in the winter around March. From that, we all decided to show up at a few regattas and race level to pretty much class rules and then award ourselves a cup.

Operation Cruising
Over the Rail
Seasickness is the elephant on the boat that everyone is thinking about but trying to ignore. Dictionary.com defines seasickness as: “nausea and dizziness, sometimes accompanied by vomiting, resulting from the rocking or swaying motion of a vessel in which one is traveling at sea.” What does this mean for your sailing adventures? If you are someone who is not affected by the motion of the boat, wonderful. However, if you are, this could really put a damper on your sailing plans.

The Rules Guy
Mark Room – When Do You Have to Gybe?
I have now written three articles about mark-room at a gybe mark. Last time, we talked about situations when you were allowed room to gybe. I finished off showing a case where you are required to gybe. The situations in my earlier articles occur most commonly when boats have been sailing a reach or upwind course to the mark and the next course is downwind. This time we will look at marks where boats have been sailing downwind and the next course is upwind.

Instant Emergency Boarding Ladder
Imagine. Boat at anchor, coffee in your hand, the wind is blowing. Suddenly, this tranquil moment is interrupted by the sound of rushing water, and an ice cold feeling across your entire body. You've tripped and fallen overboard! Yikes - “How do I get back onto the boat?" Boarding ladders are one of the most important pieces of hardware on a boat. Having easy access to return to your vessel can be critical in an emergency like the one described above.

Steering Downwind
Less is More
Courtesy North Sails. Coordinating commands to perfect downhill steering. Steering off the wind, on reaches and runs, requires a coordinated effort between helmsman and spinnaker trimmer. The spinnaker trimmer often has as good a feel for performance as you do while driving, and together you can coordinate efforts to take advantage of changes in conditions. Of course, as the helm, you must respond to other inputs as well. The tactician may suggest one move, and changing sailing conditions may suggest another.

Goodbye Finn – Some Olympic History
When I was first attracted to Olympic sailing all the boats were designed for big men. The top sailors were larger than life. They won big silver World Championship trophies and Olympic medals. Some wrote great books and others made fast sails and built fast boats. Some top sailors were secretive and mysterious representing nations behind the iron curtain such as DDR/East Germany and SR/Soviet Union. They were not always at major events, and they never travelled away from Europe.
