Editor's Note
Finally, an ordinary weekend
After all this time we were hoping for something extremely simple – an ordinary summer boating weekend. It couldn’t have turned out any better. We kicked it off as part of live, in-person Canada Day celebration. Everyone was wearing red Canada outfits, soaking in the sun and drinking in the festive tropical music. Dancing onshore, cockpit partying aboard!

A bridge too far, Jeff Bezos’ superyacht threatened with egging
A resistance force has mobilised in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. Threats of crowds egging Jeff Bezos’ new superyacht have seemingly disrupted Oceanco’s plan to temporarily dismantle a historic bridge to allow the yacht to pass. It now seems that the yacht will have to find another route to take. Bezos’s gigantic, 430-million-euro ($485 million) sailing yacht with its 40m high trio of masts is too big for the iconic...

Boat DIY
Cradle adjustments can distort your boat
Last issue of CYOB, we discussed stay and shroud tension and how these adjustments can affect boat stress and even jam cupboard doors. Another important yet often overlooked adjustment is the cradle! I see many boats where all the weight is either on the keel or all on the pads. There is a proper load distribution for each boat. But as a guideline, I use the 70/30% rule. 4 Steps to Control Vessel Flooding
Every year the Coast Guard reports thousands of boating incidents, many which involve collisions with objects or equipment failures. While most boaters have safety gear on board that is legally required, many do not have the tools and materials on-hand to make a critical repair in case of an emergency. Flooding can happen quick! For example, a 3-inch hole, 2 feet below the water line, will result in...

VHF book review: Some Good Summer, Winter, Spring and Fall Reading
Three books in a series of books by Canadian author Erik Skovgaard. These three books, as the author states, are not intended to be comprehensive treatises on their subject matter. They are intended to be Guide/Handbooks. This has been extremely well accomplished. To entice you to actually read and use them there are three major points to consider. 1) They are not large (5.5 x 8.5), so they will fit in any convenient spot close to your electronics or bookshelf at home.

The three-year tune-up
Our boats are now on the water after a couple of really unusual years – if we did get out it was checkered with restrictions, lockdowns etc etc and etc. So this year, there was lots to do before launch - antifouling, polishing, cleaning, engine check-overs and the installation of a three years’ worth of birthday and Christmas electronic doo-dads. By now, most of us have had a chance to enjoy some time on the water. With time on the water...
