From outdoor lighting to the Festival of Lights
While reviewing the long list of articles we published this year, I was inspired to showcase here in this issue articles illustrating the immense range of possibilities in lighting. As a new wave of COVID forces us to be even more cautious, now is a great time to present a sampling of our industry's accomplishments in 2021, the insights of experts in all aspects of lighting from emergency lighting to mood lighting, the illumination of iconic buildings, new control technologies, and more. Good reading and happy holidays!

Emergency Lighting
From Past to Present: The Evolution of Emergency Lighting
By Noemie Belime
Jeff Beare began working in Emergency Lighting on February 13, 1995. ‘I remember this date very well because it was the day after my son was born. Emergency lighting hadn’t evolved much back then. We were still using 15 W T6.5 lamps as primary lamps in Exits and Sortie signs when AC was present as well as a single 6 W wedge base lamp in the center of the sign in Emergency or DC mode. Photometrics were not used to calculate paths of egress. Instead, we would use a rule of thumb metric. Looking back, people never thought of Emergency Lighting as innovative technology and still don’t think that, but in 1995, red LEDs were coming into use for Exit and Sortie signs because of their energy savings and longevity; they were costly, but highly efficient.

Building Automation
5 Reasons You Should Invest in a Building Automation System
Remember the old days, just a few years back, when the lighting “revolution” everyone talked about was the transition from traditional lighting systems to LEDs? That’s old news now. There’s a new revolution unfolding within the building world now—and it too is being spurred by advancements in LED technology: Building automation and lighting controls. The premise that lighting should be lighting and independent from other building systems is obsolete. Today, lighting is an integral part of the future of building automation. Facility managers and building owners can now manage and integrate several types of applications.

IoT
The IoT and Lighting Design
By Craig DiLouie
The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) recently published ANSI/IES LP-12-21, IoT Connected Lighting. This 43-page lighting practice and American National Standard provides guidance for lighting professionals to consider and evaluate connected lighting and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and applications. The IoT can be confusing when one tries to define it according to its full range of features and benefits, which are evolving. Instead, it is more useful to define it according to core capabilities, with realized features and benefits individualized to applications. An IoT solution networks sensors and computing devices that can be globally programmed, interoperate, cross-communicate, and generate data.

Outdoor Lighting
Applying the Art to Architectural Outdoor Lighting
For an architect, a building is a work of art. But while that art looks great during the day, how do you enhance it to make it look great at night, so it’s not just a dark canvas? Ellen Godson LC, IES, a lighting design consultant with Lightspec Canada and member of The Illuminating Engineering Society, sees more and more building owners wanting to achieve just that. “Even with bridges, we see examples. The Jacques Cartier Bridge, in Montreal where light is not only used to highlight the columns and the structure, but also used to produce a nightly light show.

- Lighting the Race to Zero
With the UN’s COP26 Climate Change Conference, a sense of impatience has echoed across news channels. The clock is ticking and the world is warming. There’s a widespread sense of unrest that calls for action, not words, to minimize and avert the damage we as human beings have caused to the planet we share. Each of us plays a role in creating positive impact, but those roles are not of equal weight. Meaningful change is going to take more than a little individual recycling or turning down our home thermostat. What is required now is coordinated international planning and fundamental changes in governmental and business thinking.
