When an opportunity came to get a VHF certificate, I initially skipped it. After all, I did the certificate just…wait a minute! How long ago was that? Right, it has been a lot longer than I imagined and I considered that maybe VHF technology had changed, maybe I forgot some stuff, maybe…who knows. I’ll take the course.
To get to the bottom line here, while most of the good practices and technical details have lingered in some corner my over-burdened brain, it was very useful to review the whole thing. For example (please don’t age-shame me) cell phones were not as much of a thing when I first took the course and while they are now omnipresent, I was not surprised to learn that even with all the cell communication advances, the range is still limited. A mile or two offshore, you will truly appreciate that VHF and access to Channel 1-6.

Speakers aim directly at skiers, boarders, surfers and tubers
Most marine stereo speakers produce music that bounces off the transom and reflects off the water, turning it into a distorted mush for anyone behind the boat. This is especially true when the volume is cranked up to be heard above the roar of an engine.

Steering system maintenance
An important, but often overlooked maintenance item on any type of boat is it’s steering system. Most are relatively safe and secure, and are generally bulletproof – requiring very little maintenance to operate well. That said, it’s important to perform at minimum an annual inspection before launch to avoid looming failures and potentially costly repairs.
