Canada SailGP Grabs 3rd at Debut Event
Who are these people? CAN SailGP’s done what nobody could have expected contending for a monumental win in its first outing, the Bermuda event that kicked off the SailGP season. Dueling all weekend with the perceived top teams, the Canadian entry showed the legs and smarts to be a serious contender. After this weekend, no-one will be asking ‘who are these people?’ (By contrast, the other new entry in this league, Switzerland, was up the track in every race, as you might expect from a rookie effort.)

Development Team’s Sam Bonin and Arie Moffat
Sam Bonin and Arie Moffat have teamed up in 49er. “On Deck” conversation with the sailors from Ontario. Arie, how long have you known each other and how did this team come about? Canadians Battle at Melges 24 Worlds
After two full years of hiatus in the schedule of the World Championships, the International Melges 24 Class returned to Worlds action May 7-15: it was October 2019 when in Villasimius Luca Perego’s Maidollis was crowned World Champion for the second time, and, after that moment the pandemic blocked everything, preventing the sailing of the 2020 and 2021 World Championship. Four Canadian boats were in the tough field of 31. Fraser McMillan’s Sunnyvale from Royal Victoria YC finished 2nd.

8 Bells
Bill Knowles, Founder of Salty Dawgs
At the end of April founder and long-time leader of the Salty Dawg Sailing Association died after a long illness. His passing is sad of course, but his organization lives on. Some time prior to the pandemic, I had the genuine pleasure of sharing a few days with the group as they prepared to depart Hampton VA for the Caribbean. It was a great group that equally enjoyed a love of cruising safely and having a great time on boats.

On Which Side Do You Want to Be?
When you are trying to beat a boat that’s just ahead or behind, you have to consider strategy, not just tactics. In the same way that you want to be on the ‘favored’ side of the fleet, you should put yourself on the ‘favored’ side of any boat that you are trying to pass. You can often take control of a nearby boat by making just a small gain relative to them.

Interesting Classes
Gold Cup of the Nordic Folkboats Highlight Kiel Week
Many Canadian classes, like Sharks, Bluenose, 8Ms and even Stars and Lightnings, have their roots way back. Folkboats made their way to Canada, but according to this news release, the class is very much alive and well in Europe. The eternally young traditional class. For 80 years now, the Nordic Folkboats have been shaping the picture on northern European regattas.

Simple Sailing Tips… That Everyone Forgets
Sailing really is a simple sport, just you and the wind and waves. And the boat, an infernal contraption made of twisted ropes, slipping cleats and flapping sails. Ok, so sailing is simple when you tame Hydra’s nest and get all the ropey bits correct.
