Development, Implementation & Auditing Your Electrical Safety Program;Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code
In this issue Terry Becker provides insight into developing, implementing, and auditing an electrical safety program and Bill Burr provides an overview of Section 42 for electric welders. In our other feature article, ABB provides insight into the new heavy duty certification for liquid tight metal conduits and fittings. The Alberta Electrical Alliance continues to fund-raise for their new Community Scholarship until the end of the month, and the ECABC is hosting a webinar on revisions to Section 10 of the Canadian Electrical Code, and Alberta has recently released two STANDATA updates.

Arc Flash & Shock Safety
Development, Implementation & Auditing Your Electrical Safety Program
By Terry Becker
The CSA Z462 Workplace electrical safety Standard published its 2021 Edition in January. A mandatory requirement for an employer is developing, implementing, and auditing an Electrical Safety Program. If you have an Electrical Safety Program, is it up to date in its policies, practices and procedural requirements, is it performing as expected? Workers do not necessarily do what you expect, they do what you inspect! Management of change is required.

Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1 – A Road Map: Section 42
By William (Bill) Burr
The Code is a comprehensive document. Sometimes it can seem quite daunting to quickly find the information you need. This series of articles provides a guide to help users find their way through this critical document. This is not intended to replace the notes in Appendix B or the explanations of individual requirements contained in the CEC Handbook, but will hopefully provide some help in navigating the Code. These notes are based on the 25th edition.

New Heavy-Duty Certification for Liquid-Tight Flexible Metal Conduits and Fittings Explained CE Code Revision is Defined and Explained by Experts
By Farhan Nadri and Guy Benjamin
In 2018, the Canadian Electrical Code (CE Code) was revised so that liquid-tight flexible metal conduits (LFMC) and fittings used in certain hazardous locations are required to be “heavy-duty” (HD) certified. The Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certification ensures that the conduits and fittings intended for use in such classified locations undergo rigorous testing and evaluation, thereby helping to ensure the integrity of installation expected in these locations.

Lithium-ion Battery Energy Storage Systems – A Manageable Fire Risk
Lithium-ion storage facilities contain high-energy batteries combined with highly flammable electrolytes. In addition, they are prone to quick ignition and explosion in a worst-case scenario. Such fires can have a significant financial impact on organizations. Rapid detection of electrolyte gas particles and extinguishing are the key to a successful fire protection concept. Siemens offers a VdS-certified fire protection concept for stationary Li-ion battery storage systems.

Grounded in Ontario: Arc Fault and Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters with Josie Erzetic
Over the past year, ESA inspectors have identified over 1,400 defects related to arc fault protection of receptacles, making it our number one wiring defect. Arc fault is a leading cause of electrical fires in homes, but it doesn’t have to be! ESA’s analysis of the Ontario Fire Marshal’s data concluded that arc fault circuit interrupters (AFCI) protection could reduce residential electrical distribution fires by 71 per cent.

- STANDATA Variance: 2018 Canadian Electrical Code – Rule 12-102 Insulated Conductors
Underground service entrance (USE) cables, USEB and USEI, are listed for use in Table 19 as service entrance cables only. What about using them for feeders and branch circuits? Discussion: 1. USEB and USEI cables as listed for use in Table 19 for service conductors do not contain a bonding conductor as part of the cable as required by Rule 10-610. As such, USEB and USEI cables are not acceptable for use as feeders beyond the load side of the service equipment where the grounded conductor is bonded to ground.
- STANDATA Bulletin: 2018 Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1 – Section 10 – Grounding and Bonding
The replacement of existing metal water service lines with a non-metal type and the insertion of non-metal devices such as water softeners in the water line may result in the loss of adequate service grounding. To ensure that grounding is not compromised: a) An alternate ground electrode should be installed where a metal water service line serving as the grounding electrode is replaced with a non-metal line.

- N.L. Sisters Use Women’s Committee to Bond Over Service to Others
AnnMarie Candow and Laura Kieley enjoy performing community service in their hometown of St. John’s, Newfoundland. But until the last three years, they didn’t think about doing so with their local unions. That changed when they were introduced to the Women’s Committee — Candow with her local union and Kieley at the international level. The two are now leaders in promoting the IBEW along Atlantic Canada’s coast and recently helped raise nearly $2,000 for Stella’s Circle, a St. John’s nonprofit that aids at-risk adults facing barriers to entering the workforce.
