A closer look at the defining qualities of sportsmanship
Why is good sportsmanship important in sailing? Because no matter how hard we compete, most of us still want to have fun. And almost all of us feel it’s critical to have a fair playing field. If we want to attract more racers to the sport and continue getting good race management, sportsmanship is the only way to go. On top of all that, it makes us feel good. Sportsmanship is a theme that runs through all competitive events, but what’s considered ‘good’ or ‘bad’ sportsmanship is different with every sport.

Cup winning moment
One of the most enjoyable shoots last year was Team Defiant’s defense of the Canada’s Cup. The racing against Zing was a lot tougher than the results indicated and when I caught them at the finish line, Terry McLaughlin and the crew were pretty happy to hoist the flag.

Even though the summer days are supposed to be longer, time seems to run much slower in the winter. One can only read so many books, watch so much TV and take so many walks. A few years ago an idea came to me while in the beautiful Thousand Islands and docked at the fabulous Clayton Classic Boat Museum in New York State. Besides classic boats, there were a number of beautifully...

The Power of Planning
Like many of you, I am itching to travel again… So, I will be heading to Croatia in September 2022 to join a flotilla! I am very excited to explore the islands, wineries, waterfalls, historic towns and much more. Even though I am part of a flotilla with a set itinerary, I still need to study my own passage plan as my crew and boat are my responsibility. A thorough passage plan is key to a successful, and relaxing, trip! I know you have probably read about passage planning before, so I will not get down to the basics.

Split keel reduces the draft of your boat
Can also be used to increase stability. With the massive increase in boat sales through the pandemic, people are getting back on the water. What do you do if you find the perfect boat, but it draws 12”-18” too much? Or is the boat a little too tender? MarKeel Technology’s Split Torpedo Bulb is a solution for both these problems. You can reduce the boat’s draft by cutting the existing keel and installing a set of custom poured Split Torpedo Bulbs, from 200 lb to 1,200 lb per side.
