Editor's Note
Greening Gently
Boating started out green. Sailboats didn’t have motors and while galley slaves may have tossed their food scraps over the side, that was about it. More recently, outboards and diesels came along and while initially they were smoggy and leaked petrochemicals into the water, they evolved into being inoffensive. Certainly, their impact was minor compared to commercial shipping, leaking urban manufacturing and sewage...

Sponsored: Trim Tabs vs. Interceptors: What are the Advantages and Disadvantages?
Trim tabs are a common device attached to the transom or within a transom pocket, usually in pairs, that can lift the transom and lower the bow under way by pressing down at an angle into the water flowing past the transom. The sharper the angle, the greater the effect of the trim tab. Interceptors are mounted on the lowest surface of the transom, and like trim tabs, interceptors redirect the water flow to change the attitude...

Canada Faces Challenges, NZ Explodes in Saint-Tropez
The European portion of SailGP Season 4 got underway this weekend in Saint-Tropez, France. Having hit record breaking speeds last year on the Côte d’Azur, Phil Robertson and the Canadians were looking forward to this weekend of racing, but things did not turn out as hoped. A penalty in the pre-start of race one was a precursor of what was to come, and it proved difficult for the team to recover.

Cruising
Nautical Safari to Tanzania, 2022
In October 2015, I purchased a Richard Woods Elf 26 catamaran in South Africa. But it wasn’t until 2017, after a major refit in Gordon’s Bay, South Africa that she was delivered to Watamu, on Kenya’s Indian Ocean North Coast. That voyage took some three or four months of sailing over a period of almost nine months. By late November 2017, CassandravillE (named in honour of my wife Cassandra—as if I had a choice!)...

Occam’s razor is a problem-solving principle that I often use in my work as a marine technician. It’s simple but is also often overlooked; and it’s easy to when we’re confused or scared of the outcome and its effect on our investment. Occam’s razor says that ‘entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity’. In more simple language: The simplest explanation is usually to best one.
