boot Under the Tree
Prior to the plague, we had the extraordinary pleasure of occasionally attending the boot show in Dusseldorf. No, that’s not footwear exhibition – “boot” means boat, of course - but rather the largest boat show in Europe, possibly in the world. The sheer size of the show is almost overwhelming with16 huge halls, several filled with every size of power and sail boats and the rest filled with gear, charter destinations, marine art, water toys, scuba etc etc and more etc, a lot of which doesn’t always make it to our shores.
It’s a fine way to get away from the Canadian winter and fuel boating fever. The boot show is all indoors so, after visiting TIBS it’s an opportunity to continue the off-season illusion and spend another week climbing on boats and talking about summer. This year, now that travel is happening once more, the pilgrimage is on.

How to Plan a Yacht Charter
The yacht charter vacation product was pioneered in modern times by companies like The Moorings over 50 years ago, and for decades remained a best-kept secret of the boating industry. Back then, traditional sailboats comprised the majority of yachts available for many years, which required extensive sailing knowledge on the part of the customer in order to entertain the idea of enjoying a vacation like this.

Customers and Boat Yards - Part 2
It’s tough not to compare auto repairs with boat repairs. The reality is that the systems that contractors, yards and dealerships will use are often quite different from auto dealerships. Here’s a few things to be aware of: The assessment isn’t as advanced: don’t be surprised if a boat yard, contractor, or dealership can’t give you a quote over the phone.

Timing the perfect weather window!
For many years I have been fearful of the 140-mile sail from Sarnia to Tobermory. Lake Huron is 200 miles long and looks like an ocean. The great cruising grounds and quiet anchorages of the North Channel are one scary overnight sail away. The morning of August 5, 2023, Terry, Bill and I left Sarnia Yacht Club on our Nonsuch 36, Canatara.

Using Electronic Visual Distress Signals in Place of Pyrotechnic Distress Signals
As a pleasure boater with a vessel that is over 6m in length and operating over a mile from shore I am required to carry distress signaling devices. For years this has been satisfied by pyrotechnic flares. These flares are only certified for four years from date of manufacture and are difficult to dispose of, never mind that flare nights when we once could safely practice the use of these devices in a...

Designer Ray Wall
We salute the recent passing on Vancouver Island of Ray Wall at 91 who designed the CS36, CS33 and CS 27 and the Quanta 28. When Brampton builder CS Yachts launched the CS27 in 1975, it was a giant step towards becoming one of this country’s big three builders. Ray Wall, who drew the 27 while he was employed with Camper and Nicholsons, moved to Canada in 1977 and was responsible for the CS36 (500 built including Merlin)...
