Beyond the limits of the pandemic
The annual industry meetings are still not fully attended, but rather in a hybrid form, though the participants all agree on how good it is to see colleagues again. The pandemic may even have had positive aspects for those working in research and design. The closed boundaries may have opened up the limits of creativity. The lighting projects and new luminaires bear witness to this. More than ever, the exploration of new materials and technologies is at the heart of the values of an industry that continues to renew itself and, as we shall see, to play an increasingly important role in social issues. Enjoy your reading!

Transformation of the Marriott Château Champlain Hotel, an Emblem of Montreal's Modern Heritage
Originally designed by Quebec architects Rogers D’Astous and Jean-Paul Pothier in 1967 at the time of the world’s fair, the Château Champlain is notable for its iconic structure and technical accomplishments. Overlooking the city from the top of its 128-meter, 38-story height, the hotel was once the tallest in Canada. Today, it continues to catch the eye of passers-by downtown with its rhythmic half-moon windows and the neo-Roman arches of Windsor station. Earning the nickname of “the cheese grater,” these window frames simulating the look of balconies were put at the core of the design narrative created by Sid Lee Architecture.

Project Story: Architectural Precision downlighting Enhances Desert Home
A combination of stunning design, a spectacular desert setting, and exceptional architectural lighting is a winning combination for a private residence just outside of St. George, Utah. JRC Lighting was hired by the homeowner to create the lighting concept for the showpiece home. "The house has an almost industrial look to it, with a focus on clean lines," said Kevin Meredith, principal at JRC Lighting. "My goal was to keep the lighting understated and let the architecture, and the views, sell themselves.”

By Lightform
One of the integral elements that contributes to authentic design is values–knowing what yours are, committing to them, and actively pursuing them in your work. Italian designer lighting brand Foscarini declares their values proudly, and strives to live up to them with every luminaire they create. In 2021, Foscarini reaches the fortieth anniversary of their founding on the island of Murano, producing custom lighting for contract projects before creating a catalogue for the designer lighting market two years later. Today, Foscarini can look back at four decades of growth, exploration, and change, during which they have been guided by the core values–listed confidently on their website–that have led to Foscarini being one of the most-respected names in the designer lighting world.

Signify LED’s to Enhance Road Safety and Driving Experience in Stockholm’s E4 Bypass Tunnel
Signify will enhance road safety and improve the driving experience in Stockholm’s E4 Bypass tunnel, connecting the northern and southern parts of Stockholm County. Of the road’s 21 kilometers, more than 18 kilometers will be in a tunnel, making it one of the longest road tunnels in Europe, and one of Sweden's largest and most prestigious infrastructure projects to date. While it’s true that there’s always light at the end of the tunnel, the quality of the lighting on the road at each end of the tunnel, and the lighting within the tunnel, is hugely important.

- DesignLights Consortium Releases Draft 2 of LUNA Technical Requirements
The DesignLights Consortium (DLC) has released for comment the second draft of technical requirements for outdoor LED luminaires that not only save energy and meet the DLC’s Solid-State Lighting (SSL) Technical Requirements, but also include attributes that limit light pollution, sky glow and light trespass. - Luminale: Biennale for Light Art and Urban Design to Pause in 2022
Since 2002, the Luminale festival in the German cities of Frankfurt and Offenbach has accompanied Light + Building, the world's leading trade fair for light and building services technology, which takes place every two years in Frankfurt am Main. Initiated by Messe Frankfurt as a "bridge from the exhibition grounds to the city", the public event has since developed into an internationally recognised light and culture festival with over 250,000 visitors. Messe Frankfurt as the organiser holds all trademarks and funds the project office, the promotion of Luminale and a beacon project. Due to Messe Frankfurt's economic situation, this is not viable for 2022. Therefore, the will not take place in 2022.
