Spring Thaw (mostly)
Last week we thought spring was in the air when suddenly there was a blizzard. By this point, despite the generally mild weather in central Canada everyone had enough and was focussed on launch, but snowstorm it did. Fortunately, my winter tires were still on (largely because I hadn’t got around to flipping to summers) and I was able to wind my way to the Mimico Cruising Club for the Broad Reach Spring Thaw. A lot of other people saw it that way too so the event was packed.
The backstory is that last year, Broad Reach re-initiated the Spring Thaw Luncheon. It turned into a reasonable success so this year the people at the foundation opted to pump up the event by moving it to a dinner.

SV Dorothy, Oldest Canadian-built Sailboat, Wins 2024 Classic Boat Award
The Maritime Museum of British Columbia announces that one of its iconic sailboats, Dorothy, has won the 2024 Classic Boat’s Award for “Restored Sailing Vessel of the Year under 40ft.” Classic Boats, an internationally renowned magazine featuring vintage boats, launches its Awards each year to “celebrate the best vessels in the sometimes unsung world of classic and traditional boatbuilding and restoration.”

Bayfield Marine Turns 40 with Big April Events
Ron and Pat Reder started out in October 1984 across the road from where they are right now on the Bayfield River just outside Bayfield ON. The store front was about 10 x 20 and the rest of that side of the building was a stock room, wood finishing room, then behind that was more back stock and the lunchroom. Expanding every few years for the store front, then moving over to this new building five years ago, this year with Adam, Shelley, and Holly are carrying on the business.
