Growing Skilled Trades
Apprenticeship funding from the federal government is being rolled out by industry organizations, we've had a few individual funding annoucements but you'll find each organization selected to distribute funding below. This issue features an article from contributor Keith Sones who discusses the importance of human resources to electrification. We also have the answer to our latest code question from Bill Burr. The next one will be in our first issue of October. |

Section 60 — Electrical Communications Systems
By William (Bill) Burr
Fill in the blank - Communication conductors in a building may not be placed in a shaft with the conductors of an electric light or power system unless the conductors of all systems are insulated and are separated by at least _____ or encased in non-combustible tubing.
Answer: 50mm.
Communication system conductors are designed and manufactured for operation at specific voltage and current levels. They are not normally rated for the higher operation voltage levels used in electrical power systems, as their function is primarily to transmit low-power communication and information signals.
Consequently, accidental contact with higher-power conductors can cause damage and propagate fire and shock hazards in the communication system and the building. Also, communication system conductors can be installed and serviced by people unfamiliar with the safe operation and maintenance of normal electrical power systems. To prevent these hazards, Rule 60-308 1) to 4) of the Code provides requirements for separating communication system conductors from other conductors.

Growing Skilled Trade Workforce Critical to Electrification
By Keith Sones
The screaming pager viciously broke the silence of the night and peaceful sleep I’d been enjoying. Instantly alert, I knew the drill, jumping out of bed and pulling on the clothes that were conveniently placed on the rocking chair beside me as I waited for what I knew was coming next. The stern but calm voice of the dispatcher fulfilled my expectation. Read More |

Canadian Electrical Contractor Discussions
AFCI, GFCI & Dual Function Breakers
A CECD Group member started a discussion recently on AFCI, GFCI, and Dual Function breakers, saying that, "I am amazed at the price of AFCI, GFCI and Dual Function breakers, I mean they are more the rule than the exception these days so production volumes must have gone up which usually makes things cheaper, but prices haven't come down (much). I fully expect Dual Function to become the rule for ALL circuits in the not too distant future (with a few necessary exceptions of course), and that's going to make the average home load center pretty damn expensive!"
