Dan Bresnitz will be the keynote speaker at CPCA’s Annual Conference in Quebec City on May 25 and 26. The event will be held at the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac Hotel. Bresnitz is a professor at the University of Toronto, and co-director of the Innovation Policy Lab, and the Munk Chair of Innovation at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Work Starts on Tower for Gordie Howe Bridge
What is probably Canada's largest infrastructure project, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, will soon see work begin on the final portion of the bridge tower—the pylon head. This will connect Windsor, ON with Detroit, MI. The project team says the tower legs, or lower pylon, have reached their full height of 460 ft. The design-build team under Bridging North America will complete the final 262 ft of the tower. Read More |

Ontario to Gain Electric Vehicle Battery Plant
Plans for a new battery plant for electric vehicles in Windsor, ON, show Canada's auto industry is keeping pace with the emerging future. The project, announced on March 24, is supported by the federal government, the government of Ontario and the municipality of Windsor. Corporate partners are LG Energy Solution Ltd. and Stellantis NV. The project is estimated to cost more than $5-billion. Read More |

Bombardier's Contribution to Canadian Economy
Bombardier Inc. has often been criticized for being a recipient of federal and provincial largesse in its manufacturing operations. A new assessment of the company by PwC Canada (formerly Pricewaterhouse Coopers) says this perception ignores the company's total contribution to the Canadian economy. Flame Retardant Coating Comes From Renewable Materials
A new type of coating that could limit the flammability of wood used in construction has been introduced at the March meeting of the American Chemical Society. The team that developed this environmentally friendly flame retardant envisions that the coating could also be utilized for other flammable materials, such as textiles, polyurethane foam and 3D-printed parts. CPCA Questions Need for Hazardous Substances Workshops
The Canadian Paint and Coatings Association (CPCA) is criticizing a federal initiative to hold a series of workshops and interactive events for providing solutions to problems involving dangerous products. CPCA says "there is no substantive, verifiable data as to what those ‘solutions’ are meant to address." The Association's key point is that all these substances are already closely regulated. Intertape Polymer Group Inc. of Montreal will hold an Annual and Special Meeting on May 11, 2022. The Special Meeting is to approve takeover by 1351693 B.C. Ltd., an affiliate of Clearlake Capital Group, L.P. IPG shareholders will receive $40.50 per share in cash under the terms of the deal, which IPG says represents a premium of approximately 66 percent to the company's 30-day volume price. Read More |

Netzsch is offering the ProPhi, a new pre-grinding unit. A pre-mill, the company says, manages grinding coarse feed material that is difficult to handle in a standard mill. Pre-dispersion of agglomerates, which is usually done batchwise or continuously in intensive mixing units, can also be carried out there. Clariant has unveiled its new Vita 100 percent bio-based surfactants and polyethylene glycols (PEGs). These aim to directly address climate change by helping remove fossil carbon from the value chain. The introduction of 100 percent bio-based surfactants and PEGs significantly expands Clariant’s Vita designated ingredients.
