New Year, Same Scenario?
Here we are at almost the two-year mark of living with the pandemic, but hopefully this year we’ve set our expectations accordingly. Last year, no one wanted to see a repeat of 2020 – and it didn’t even seem possible – and yet, to some degree, it was way too similar for comfort. Supply issues continued, the employment drought remained, and there are still flare ups in COVID-19 variants affecting travel, events, office and school occupancy, and other aspects of our daily lives.
That said, we are better prepared in 2022 to roll with the punches and be more flexible in finding alternative solutions for whatever work stoppage is affecting our companies’ productivity. Unfortunately, it’s going to be another year of adapting to “the new normal,” but we’ve all become good at learning new tools and work-arounds.
Overall, demand for new construction across the board – in residential, multi-use commercial, retail, hospitality, and industrial – is up and industry pundits see no signs of that waning. How it takes shape will be a bit different, for example, retail will be more experiential with the likes of Amazon Go and offices transforming from rigid parameters into flex spaces.
I believe 2022 will be a solid year for those in the new construction, renovation, design, and electrical trades. There might still be delays in completion due to the lag in getting materials, but I don’t think plans will be scrapped.
Fasten your seatbelts for another rollercoaster of economic and logistics issues. I’m counting on the dips and hills on this year’s ride to be less extreme than we’ve experienced over the past two. |
