Development, Implementation & Auditing Your Electrical Safety Program
By Terry Becker
The CSA Z462 Workplace electrical safety Standard published its 2021 Edition in January. A mandatory requirement for an employer is developing, implementing, and auditing an Electrical Safety Program. If you have an Electrical Safety Program, is it up to date in its policies, practices and procedural requirements, is it performing as expected? Workers do not necessarily do what you expect, they do what you inspect! Management of change is required. Read More |

Safety Made Smart: ISOtechnology from Siemens
By Alyssa Kerslake
Life safety today is top of mind for nearly everyone. There is a certain level of trust that fire alarm systems continue to work within a fire incident. With system survivability being a key concern to regulators, building managers, and the public, Siemens has developed systems that are designed to meet and exceed regulations that protect people, property, and assets. One of the most significant concerns, particularly in a large multi-story building, is implementing a secure and fully functional fire alarm system. Read More |

Disability in the Workplace
By Michelle Branigan
Disability is often overlooked when discussing diversity, equity and inclusion, especially in a work context. With recent high-profile social movements centring on race and gender, disability may be less present in our conversations. But the World Health Organization reports that almost everyone will temporarily or permanently experience disability at some point in their life. Electrification and Energy Efficiency
Enhanced energy efficiency and carbon free electricity can reduce regional emissions by only about 40 percent by 2050—half the amount required to achieve the 80% goal. To meet 80% reductions, we need to incorporate a third strategy, strategic electrification. Strategic electrification is powering end users with electricity instead of fossil fuels in a way that increases energy efficiency and reduces pollution, while lowering costs to customers and society, as part of an integrated approach to deep decarbonization. Achieving Electrical Safety By Design
All workers, regardless of age, need to be reminded that while Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential, it is the last line of defense in an electrical hazard. The ANSI Z10/CSA Z1000 Occupational Health and Safety risk control hierarchy lists PPE as the least effective safeguard for arc-flash risk. By far the best approach is to design safety into the plant’s electrical system from the start. Read More |
