LightFair as if you were there
October marked the return of a major industry event, LightFair. In this edition, read about the highlights of the conference, the winners in various categories and an opinion piece by our contributor David Gordon. The Casino shines in a new light. Read about a major enhancement project about that Diamond that shines in the Montreal Night. Whether you are designing a distribution centre, climate-controlled or private warehouse, safety, efficiency and productivity should be top of mind. Flexible and scalable lighting controls systems that promote energy efficiency can help keep warehouses running smoothly no matter the challenges—whether it be a spike in demand for goods or a global health crisis. Read how the IES author came to that conclusion. Good reading! |

Case Study
Montreal Casino Enhancement Lighting
By Philippe Perreault
The Montreal Casino's major enhancement project consisted of replacing some 300 existing High Pressure Sodium (HPS) luminaires with new Light Emitting Diode (LED) luminaires with the ability to replicate the existing lighting that has shaped the Casino's iconic image since its inception; A Diamond That Shines In The Night. The design team at Pageau Morel and Associates, led by Mr. Mathieu Leclerc, P.Eng. LEED BD+C PA, Vice President and Senior Associate, in collaboration with éclairage HITECH specification team faced a multitude of challenges to overcome. The first challenge was to be able to recreate the special colour produced by a special HPS lamp using an LED luminaire. To do this, RGBA (Red Green Blue Amber) and RGBW (Red Green Blue White) luminaires were tested on site to find the right lighting solution. Contrary to our initial idea, the RGBW fixture produced the best result. Read More |

2020 Demonstrated the Importance of Warehouses During a Crisis. An Effective Lighting and Controls Strategy Can Help Keep the Supply Chain Moving
By David Buerer
In 2020, due to the global pandemic, warehouses and distribution centers became the mission critical workplaces that nearly everyone on the planet relied upon. E-commerce led to more purchases online, and these facilities became our lifeline to everyday goods and household staples. Warehouses and distribution centers are sizeable, active spaces, with many components—from pallets and people driving forklifts to conveyer belts and HVAC systems. Most warehouses typically operate on a 24/7 schedule, but the pandemic led to numerous disruptions. Social distancing and cleaning protocols impacted efficiencies and COVID-19 breakouts led to smaller operation teams or even temporary closure of facilities. To exacerbate the problems, over the past year, distribution centers have been busier than ever given demand for quick shipping and packaged goods. Read More |

Observation of LightFair … A Success
By David Gordon
Many in the lighting industry came together at the Javits Center in New York last week at LightFair, including yours truly who popped up there for a day. Here are some thoughts:
While the show had less booths, 230, and there were many “name” manufacturers not present (Acuity, Eiko, Halco, MaxLite, Leviton (and its lighting brands), Legrand (and its lighting brands), Lutron, etc) , few missed the 100+ “overseas” booths that they never stopped in anyways. The absence of that distraction added to the quality of LightFair. Read More |
