Electric may be a jolt to the industry
The Boating Ontario Conference opened yesterday in Niagara Falls and I’m actually there as you read this. I always attend anyway, but this year I have been asked to moderate a panel discussion on New Boater Education and Retention.
The focus is expected to be new boater education and resources, but it has me thinking about how difficult it is to change people’s existing beliefs and yet, how easy it is for new boating participants to embrace new technologies. Some of those new technologies may bring our industry unintended consequences.

Economic Analysis: Proposed Luxury Tax on new boats will be job killer & have major negative impact on boating sector
The tax will punish dealers, manufacturers, and middle-class workers. The federal government’s proposed luxury tax on new boats will likely lead to significant job losses and could result in far less revenue than predicted, according to a third-party analysis by renowned economist Dr. Jack Mintz. The federal government announced in the Budget last spring that it plans to introduce a tax on select items, including new boats above $250,000, beginning January 1, 2022.
