When disruption is a good thing
Every year on December 6, when tribute is paid to the 14 Polytechnique Montréal victims by broadcasting 14 beams of light on Mount Royal, I feel privileged to be part of an industry that actively participates in major trends and events. Since the advent of LED technology light has participated in all social issues as a witness and also as a bellwether. Think about designs that minimize light pollution and lamps that dramatically reduce energy consumption. In the unique situation we now find ourselves in, the opportunities to let the light shine are more interesting than ever. Good reading! |

Case Study
Ontario Association of Architects Headquarters Recognized with Sapphire Design Excellence Award
This month, we explore a highly energy-saving application of networked lighting controls at the Ontario Association of Architects Headquarters, which earned a 2021 Design Excellence in Networked Lighting Control Award for Energy Management. This 30-year-old building was the winning entry of an international design competition. Owner-occupied by the architects’ association, licensing over 4,000 members, with four light switches controlling all 22,000 sq.ft. The goal of renovation was to achieve Net Zero carbon of the 2030 Challenge in 2020. A team approach with holistic view was taken; all building systems were analyzed together to achieve optimal energy efficiency. Sustainable lighting systems and controls were identified as pillars of project success. Read More |

A former client contacted us recently, saying, “We’re stuck.” As in so many cases after 2008’s Great Recession, his division, once an industry leader, had experienced zero growth, using the same outmoded tactics to keep factories running while wishing for the old world order to return. It never did. Read More |
