It’s the end of the world as we know it (R.E.M. song)
Most of you know my passion for music and literature and my propensity to cite or quote an author or a musician in my comments, since they are sometimes able to describe the world surrounding us with very few words. This morning I heard that song from R.E.M. and I realized that so many things have changed since the COVID 19 and will continue to change over the next few months and years. As Swati Patel wrote in her article, putting the customer first has always been at the heart of our best practices. But who is this customer now, do we still know him or her? To plan the future, would you like to know more about the trends in Canadian energy production and consumption or better gauge the impacts of reduction strategies over the next 40 years, read the Canadian Energy Outlook 2021: Horizon 2060 in this issue. Good reading! |

In response to the urgent need to ensure a truly effective energy transition across the country, the Institut de l'énergie Trottier at Polytechnique Montréal, in partnership with e3c Hub–HEC Montréal and the firm ESMIA, has published Canadian Energy Outlook 2021: Horizon 2060. The report, now in its second edition, forecasts trends in Canadian energy production and consumption along with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To better gauge the impacts of reduction strategies, it compares transformation scenarios over the next 40 years, depending on whether Canada achieves carbon neutrality in 2045, 2050, or 2060. This energy modelling is based on the most comprehensive technology description of its kind in the country. Read More |

Lighting Market Slows – Q3 2021 Pulse Report Finds
By David Gordon
The Q2 Pulse of Lighting results highlighted that electrical distribution channel lighting sales were lagging overall industry performance. The recent Q3 results further emphasis that this product category continues to lag performance, essentially flat with Q2. The question then becomes, why?Is it, the impact of “work from home” and companies not having a need, or desire, to reinvest in their lighting infrastructure? Demand, especially renovation demand, has decreased due to supply chain disruption? Perhaps inventory availability, and timeliness of projects getting completed, get some to delay projects? Is the inevitable project delays pushing the need for lighting out longer, especially for new construction? Since lighting is towards the end of a project, perhaps the timing isn’t “yet” for the need for lighting on the job site? Read More |

Manitoba: Energy Saving Products in the Future
The public's strong interest in energy-saving products should continue in the coming years, providing a boom for electrical distributors, forecasted Lew Searle of Amesco Ltd., Winnipeg. These products included lamps, ballasts, electrical furnaces (especially in new homes), and central air conditioning. He said the demand for air conditioners had increased sharply, indicating to him that air conditioning is no longer the preserve of the affluent.
