Patos Island Race 2022
“This popular event is hosted by the Sidney North Saanich Yacht Club on Vancouver Island and is the first in the ‘triple crown’ of the big Island events (followed by the Round Salt Spring Race and the Swiftsure Race). The race itself is a great tactical challenge, navigating along the Canada-US border between the southern Gulf Islands and the San Juan Islands. Strong tidal currents are a major consideration here as we’re really playing at the edge of the Juan de Fuca Strait”

Mark Room – When Can You Gybe?
I have now written two articles about mark-room at a gybe mark (Part 1 and Part 2). In both cases, the mark denotes a point at which boats would clearly need to assume a different tack to sail to the next mark. We typically call these marks gybe marks, a term for which there is broad, but unwritten agreement as there are no definitions for gybe marks in the Racing Rules of Sailing.

Risk: A Racing Sailor's Curse
One definition of risk is ‘exposure to the possibility of loss.’ That basically sums it up for sailboat racers. When you take a risk, you are accepting the chance that you will lose something you have – boats, time, you’re standing in the series, a chance to catch up, etc. In the perfect world, sailors would not take any risks at all. Ideally, we would always know what the wind is going to do.

Choosing Woven Sailcloth for a Sail
Even after 30 years in the business, I still love thumbing through the pages of Canadian Yachting magazine - the beautiful new boats, the latest electronics or sailing gear. I particularly like reading the advertisements describing something that I may or not know anything about. “Lighter, faster, stronger, brighter”. I am currently looking for some new salopettes and a spray jacket and the ad copy I’m looking for is “Dryer….and stays dryer.”

The Life of Kai
So, I’m at Mobility Cup in Nepean, across the river from Ottawa. I’ve participated in Mobility Cup as a volunteer and companion sailor for over fifteen years. I don’t do it because of some sense of civic duty. I do this because I love it. I meet wonderful people and the outpouring of love and respect is overwhelming. If, as a sailor, you’ve never been to the Mobility Cup, you should go. You’ll quickly discover what I’m talking about.

Harken Single-Acting Integral Backstay Adjuster
It’s one of the best things about sailors: we hate to give up on our equipment. But if you’re like a lot of owners of boats with vintage integral hydraulic backstay units, you’ve been putting up with seepage and slippage for too long. We’ve introduced our new integral hydraulic unit to convince you it’s finally time to pull the pins on that leaker and start anew. Unlike some competitive units, you’ll notice the Harken Single-Acting Integral Backstay Adjuster has no external hydraulic hoses.
