The Year Ahead?
As we stand on the threshold of a 366-day year in the world of boating, I confess to some confusion but I am putting on my positive hat.
The years 2021 and 2022 were shut down. 2023 was the recovery year but everything was messed up particularly the supply of boats, which then jammed the resale market. You couldn’t find a boat for love or money so everyone kind of took a year off. Programs like regattas and cruises had been ruined by lockdowns and took some time to start up. Also, the weather on both sides of the country was weird.
What will 2024 deliver? Understandably at this point we have no idea what’s ahead but it is Boat Show Season and that always means spring optimism in the air. Wandering around the show with the scent of fresh fiberglass wafting creates a visceral response.

Comment from Fogh Boat Supplies on the Statement from Interlux Regarding the Discontinuation of VC17
After reading Interlux’s statement on the discontinued VC17 antifouling paint, we have prepared some of our recommendations: 1. Sand the VC17 off entirely with 80 grit sandpaper rather than 120 grit sandpaper. If you don’t remove almost all the VC17, whatever is applied over may not adhere to the hull and fall off. 2. After sanding with 80 grit sandpaper, apply one or two coats of Interprotect 2000...

Compact speaker has matching small price
Many small stereo speakers sound tinny and lack the sound pressure level (SPL) to overcome the various noises on a boat. But not the 3–1/2″ Milennia S3501 from RiverPark Marine, formerly ProSpec Electronics. The high-performance mid-range speaker fits into the tightest spaces, produces rich, high-end audio and has a price tag that matches its compact size.

Atlantic Crossing
We were crossing the Atlantic en route from Bermuda to the Azores when a voice suddenly boomed out of the VHF radio, “IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE?” We responded that we were, and the captain of a commercial fishing vessel out of Maine went on to tell us that one of his crewmen had a severe toothache and did we have any medication onboard that might help?

Off-season Prop Repairs
With boats out of the water and underwater machinery exposed, it’s a great time to examine these areas of the boat and investigate the types of repairs that may be needed before re-launching.
