Guide to the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1 – A Road Map: Section 46

Rule 46-000 Scope – states that Section 46 is a supplementary or amendatory section of the code and applies to the installation, operation, and maintenance of emergency power supply and unit equipment intended to provide power to life safety systems, exit signs, and illumination of exit signs in the event of failure of the normal power supply in cooperation with the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada. Earnings and Mobility Indicators for Newly Certified Journeypersons in Canada, 2018

The employment income of those who certify in the trades, otherwise known as journeypersons, varies markedly across Canada, with those plying their trade in the North and Western Canada making more on average in 2018 than those in Central and Eastern Canada. Despite this, starting employment incomes of newly certified journeypersons in the resource-rich provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador have fallen since 2014, while the income of journeypersons in Central Canada has risen. Mitsubishi Canada’s FS Wall Mounted Hyper-Heat Plus Heat Pump Extends Heating Capacity to -20°C

Heat pumps use air to heat refrigerant to produce heat inside the home. They are an alternative to electric baseboard heating, natural gas, oil and propane, which has the benefit of efficiency and a lower carbon footprint. Heat pumps have a higher level of efficiency compared to alternative energy sources, while also providing more precise temperature control. “The reason the FS is a breakthrough for us is because it provides 100% heat capacity at -20°C,” said Residential Product Manager, Geoff Sharman. Residential Building Permits up 8% in September
The total value of building permits rose 4.3% to $10.1 billion in September, led by Ontario (+6.3%). Construction intentions in the residential sector were up 8.2%, while the non-residential sector decreased 3.2%.On a constant dollar basis (2012=100), building permits increased 3.4% to $6.9 billion.High-value permits for two new condo buildings valued at over $300 million in the cities of Mississauga and Toronto helped push Ontario's multi-family permits up 40.4% to $1.7 billion in September. Investment in Building Construction Down 2% for August 2021
Investment in building construction decreased 2.0% to $17.7 billion in August, a fourth consecutive monthly decline. Residential construction was down 2.9% for the month, while investment in non-residential construction edged up 0.6%. On a constant dollar basis (2012=100), investment in building construction declined 2.6% to $12.7 billion in August. Read More |

New IESO Study on Gas Generation Phase-Out Provides Insights into the Future of Decarbonization in Ontario
With its low-emissions electricity system, Ontario’s economy is primed for decarbonization, even though it will be necessary to rely on existing gas generators for a number of years to support wide-scale emissions reductions. According to a study released today by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), phasing out gas generation by 2030 would result in blackouts and hinder electrification, but could be considered given more time and planning. - ABB Invests in Building technology Startup BrainBox AI
As part of its ambition to make buildings smarter, safer and more secure while improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, ABB has announced an investment in Montreal-based startup, BrainBox AI. Launched in 2019, BrainBox AI has pioneered the use of artificial intelligence to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions from Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in commercial buildings. Financial details of the investment were not disclosed.
