Race Report
Susan Trophy Race – June 3
By Katie Nicoll. The forecast looked promising, as you can be subject to NO wind or TOO much wind for the “Coolest Race on the Lake”. However, we had pretty good winds for the entire race, although at the start it looked doubtful with very light winds and a following sea. This year’s race was the reverse of a typical course. Starting just off Port Credit Yacht Club, five starts tacked up to the Fogh mark off Clarkson, rounding to port, when the wind just about pooped out again.

Converging with a Starboard Tacker
Here is a common situation that requires an important decision. You are sailing upwind on port tack, converging with another boat on starboard tack (S). If you keep sailing straight you will hit the other boat, so you must make a choice about how you will keep clear of S. Should you tack in front of S, or bear off to pass behind her? This is a tactical decision because you are maneuvering relative to another boat.

Sail Tech
Slugs, Slides, and Boltrope
Sails are attached to the sailboat rig using several different systems. Let’s begin with mainsails. The most basic attachment is with a boltrope that fits into a mast groove. This is very secure, and the sail is very well supported along the luff edge. It is also simple to build, and it makes the sail easy to recut the luff curve if you are racing and expect to have lots of sail modifications done over time.
