Onboard Readers Choice Monthly
Hello Boating Enthusiasts!
It is almost Victoria Day in Canada and you are a boater so my guess is that you are really excited for the weekend.
If you think the message below is familiar, it is, and I won't try to fool you. This is my Publisher's Message from 2023 and I am repurposing it because it is a good reminder to support your local marina or chandlery. So with that, I wish you all a happy May Long! Enjoy and #supportlocal!
"Hopefully you have already been back onboard, cleaned up the moth balls, tossed the No Damp, dusted off rain gear and made a list of the boat supplies that you need. While you are thinking about where you will purchase these things, please keep in mind that your local marinas and chandleries really appreciate your business. If you don't see it on their shelves, just ask a staff member. Most often, your items can be added to the next supplier order, and they will have it to you within days. Canada's Recreational Boating Industry is a small community and one that we should apply #supportlocal rules too. I encourage you to reach out to your local marina or chandler before the Big Box or Amazon options. Big Box and large Online E-commerce cannot provide you with in-personal service, boating expertise, and appreciation you will receive from these customer-service focused, smaller Canadian companies."
Enjoy your Reader's Choice Monthly for May 2024,
Jill Snider, Publisher | jillsnider@kerrwil.com

Trailering: Go boating where you want with a trailer boat rig
|
By Andrew McDonald - Social media is an interesting place. Ranging from entertainment to how-to videos, there’s a little something for everyone. Boating-specific Instagram pages that celebrate ‘boat-fails’ are wildly popular. Instagram pages like The Qualified Captain (@thequalifiedcaptain) boast millions of followers, with content focused on failures, rather than on education. Not surprisingly, things going awry at...

Affordable Boating Freedom with a PWC
|
By Andy Adams - While almost every other boat segment saw sales declines in 2023, the National Marine Manufacturers Association in the U.S. reported a 15% year-over-year sales increase for personal watercraft (PWCs). PWCs are easily trailerable, small enough to store in your garage and yet able to cover long distances, carry passengers, tow for tubing and wake sports, go camping, go fishing, or just be a thrill...

Powerboat Racing: Rusty Wyatt’s Sensational F1H2O Win in Indonesia
|
Last month, at the season-opening 300th Grand Prix in the 43 years of the Union Internationale Motonautique F1H2O World Championship, history was made as Sharjah Team rookie Rusty Wyatt became the first Canadian and the first UIM rookie to win a race after snatching a last-gasp victory in the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia on Lake Toba. Wyatt is a Canadian racer from Innisfil, ON, is now the first Canadian to win an F1H2O...

Bermuda: Canada Stumbles Late, US Tips Over
|
Spain got the better of two of the league’s heavyweights – Australia and New Zealand – in a tense three-boat final at the Apex Group Bermuda Sail Grand Prix to win its second SailGP event of Season 4. Canada could have been the giant killer but for an unfortunate fifth race but the US wasn’t close due to a capsize in warm up races the day before competition. Drama started before the fleet took to the Great Sound with the official news that...

Engine fires and other scares
|
Boats aren’t inherently combustible. They aren’t firetraps, and they aren’t any more or less dangerous with respect to fire breaking out than an RV, trailer, car or airplane. But there are certain ingredients that make fires a potential hazard. Because of this, boaters should be aware of that potential, and take steps to minimize the chances of fire breaking out. To break things down simply, there are three main causes of fire aboard (with many permutations of...

Understanding Fiberglass
|
Most of the boats on the water in Canada today are made using fiberglass – which is essentially a layer of fibrous stands, infused with a resin that will chemically react with a hardener, to make a strong, solid block. The way that the fibrous strands can be moved and molded, and the ways that resins can be strengthened have revolutionized boat building. As an extension of that, fiberglass care and construction are important to understand, so that repairs can...

Pursuit S268 Sport CC
|
By Andy Adams - The Pursuit S 268 Sport centre console is a do-it-all kind of boat with a solid sense of style. Centre console designs have been developed for the southern blue water sport fishing enthusiasts (and this boat would raise fish with the best of them) but the Pursuit S 268 Sport centre console offers far more utility and enjoyment than just fishing. Our test boat was supplied by Crates Lake...

Hanse 460
|
By Katherine Stone - I have always thought that September and October in the Northern Hemisphere were the best times to sail. The kids are back in school, the anchorages are wide open, the weather is still warm and the breezes tend to be more reliable, at least on the Great Lakes. So off we went on a glorious, warm, sunny and breezy day in September to review the new Hanse 460 with owner Dean...

Deluxe Canvas Enclosure means Top Quality by design
|
A top-quality, deluxe enclosure begins at the initial stage of the project by ensuring we have the best achievable pattern for a given boat frame. For many reasons, we never use the old product as a pattern. In most cases, we observe that the existing (old canvas) did not have a proper pattern before the previous fabrication to start with. Often, we see numerous wrinkles or stretches, shrunk window material, the frame is often crooked...

Helpful Tips from Canadian Power Squadron

Leave your trash at home – deal with it there!
|
Bill Marshall, AP, Chair of the National Environment Committee of CPS-ECP - Most of us like to spend a day or several days or more out on the water. To do that we have to take some food, snacks, and drinks with us. Most of that will come in packaging. Then, what do you do with all that packaging?! How many of us have seen plastic bags, plastic bottles and foam platters floating in the water? Exactly. How many people have seen something blow overboard in a gust...

Just Ask John: Inflatable Personal Flotation Device (PFD) requirements
|
John Gullick, Manager of Special Programs - I have taken much of this information direct, with limited editions, from the Canadian Safe Boating Council’s website. Requirements come from Transport Canada’s Small Vessel Regulations. Inflatable Lifejackets (PFDs) have been designed for wearability. However, if you decide that an inflatable best suits your boating needs, it is important that you understand its limitations, how to use it and how to care for it. It is also...
