Investing in the environment
Last week in my Editor’s Message I recognized the terrible damage and losses from both Hurricane Fiona here in Canada and Hurricane Ian that hit Florida. Both storms brought a ferocity that had rarely been seen in the past. I closed out the column saying that these extreme weather events certainly give me pause to think about our environment and how we can change our behaviours to slow global warming.

The Bateau à flot de Québec and Montreal events were a great success!
For this 5th edition of the Bateau à flot de Québec, the sun was there and made the event most enjoyable for visitors and exhibitors. It was in Quebec City, more precisely at the Louise Basin of the Port of Quebec Marina, that the event was held. 814 visitors met on September 9-10-11, 2022 to visit and try forty boats of all types! There was something for everyone, including tyres, cruisers, pontoons, wake boats and sailing!

Kirkfield Lift Lock to close for the season - Friday, October 7, 2022
On Tuesday, October 4th, Parks Canada advised that the Kirkfield Lift Lock will close for the season on Friday, October 7, 2022. On September 2, 2022, the Kirkfield Lift Lock suffered a mechanical failure, resulting in the site’s closure. Since then, Parks Canada team members have been on-site, working diligently to transit vessels to their home ports that cannot be trailered.

NMRA Presents 2022 Mel Barr & Old Pro Awards
On September 27, two marine industry veterans were recognized by the National Marine Representatives Association (NMRA) as the recipients of the 2022 NMRA Mel Barr and Old Pro awards. The awards were originally scheduled to be presented during IBEX but instead, were presented virtually due to the cancellation of the show ahead of the projected arrival of Hurricane Ian in the Tampa, Florida area.

Electric Shock Drowning - the invisible hazard in the water
Why is swimming not allowed at marinas? Most people assume this is to prevent swimmers from being injured or killed by boats. But there’s also another invisible hazard, electric shock. Electric shock drowning happens when electric current leaks into a surrounding body of water and the water becomes energized. If someone enters that area of water, he or she could lose muscle control and be unable to swim to safety or call for help.
