Message From The Editor
Adieu to Line Goyette
The essence of Canada's electrical industry is relationships and family. Today it is bittersweet for me to say adieu to Line Goyette, a writer and editor who has been with Kerrwil so many years, and someone who from the get-go understood how special our industry is, who respected its traditions and understood its roots.
Line brought a level of professionalism to our team, making sure the wall between advertising and editorial remained intact. She brought fun and challenged the status quo often, making us better all the way along.
She has been an integral part of our industry family, our company family, and my family. She has contributed greatly to this industry and to the success of Kerrwil through our transition from print to digital. She has nurtured and coached our team, and has made sure those who follow are well positioned for their collective careers in the electrical industry and in publishing.
The whole Kerrwil team here, and I hope I can also speak on behalf of those in the industry who know her, wish her nothing but the very best as her new chapter begins.
A few words from Line
This is my last issue. It’s time for me to look toward new challenges. It has been an honour and a great pleasure to work with all of you for the past eight years and I hope that our paths will continue to cross. I would especially like to thank the members of the editorial board, who have always been available to answer my questions, make suggestions and help CEW stay relevant. I’m very happy to see a new generation at Kerrwil, my work family, taking over. John Kerr, who has been an incredible colleague and friend for almost 30 years, offered me the final words on this: Good reading!

How Your Retention Strategy Can Help You Keep Your Best Talent
By Michelle Branigan
As 2022 kicks off some things look very much like 2021: COVID-19 is still with us, and many companies continue to face hiring challenges. While the phenomenon of “The Great Resignation” is being seen in the USA it is not yet playing out the same way in Canada. Read More |

2022 Planning Thoughts
By Gene Biben
Welcome to a new year and let me be one of the first to say, “happy New Year to you.” While some manufacturers, reps and distributors started their joint 2022 planning in Q4, for the majority of us the planning process starts in January. Why you ask? It’s because we’ve been conditioned to wait until we have the final numbers, until we have “complete” information and/or because we were too busy in Q4.Another major reason that delays joint planning is trying that the manufacturer has to develop their plans (and then get them into an acceptable format to share) and the distributor needs to develop their plan on what their strategies for the year will be … and then the rep needs to coordinate calendars (and hope both of the parties want to plan with each other.) Cybersecurity Assurance for IoT Lighting Systems
By Jared Morello
We live in a world of connected, intelligent devices referred to as the Internet of Things (IoT), and each year new products are brought online to solve modern-day challenges. Connected devices communicate to share information with other devices and systems within a network and are often implemented into the environments of companies in diverse sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, education, and commercial offices. When equipped and installed correctly with a building’s large-scale automation system, IoT devices and systems help to warrant safe and secure facilities for occupants while reducing operational expenses (OPEX) by optimizing and automating many services, including lighting and HVAC controls. CEDA Managers Throughout The Years
For at least 80% of its life, CEDA employed full-time managers to run the association. Through the years their duties and titles changed, although precise details have been hard to ascertain. Here is a short list of these people.Mr. Edmunds’ title appears at various times as Secretary, Secretary Treasurer, Secretary Manager and Manager. Whether these titles were “official” or merely the choice of the scribe of the various documents is not known. (The exact year of Mr. Edmunds’ employment is debated by those who worked with him, hence the question mark in the date.) Mr. Edmunds resigned in May 1953. Read More |

Jack drove and built Panduit in Canada and that’s where I met him and where his unique style and the way he coached me on the uniqueness of the electrical industry, the ties that bind and going beyond would make a difference.
