CY & BIC Bonus Read!
Are we already halfway through June? How does this happen? Summer is officially here in less than one week. Are you ready to put every single ounce of energy into your boating lifestyle from now until someone tells you that you must stop for winter? It’s Go Time! If you are one of the fortunate west coast boaters, you can decide if you want to keep going in the winter months – lucky you. The boating community to the east is envious!
This issue of BEN is not comprised of equipment this month. I wanted to switch it up a little bit because I think that you, our dedicated readership, will enjoy a good laugh. If you subscribe to CY magazine already, you may read “Crossing the Line” (CTL) a funny and often satire perspective of boating written by our online editor John Morris. John has a great sense of humour, and his CTL column always delivers at least one Laugh Out Loud moment. Reading the last 2 years of CTL below will be time well spent.
One more thing. I can’t speak of John Morris without paying homage to him as an Ambassador for Canadian Yachting and boating in Canada in general. Beyond his role as our Online Editor of two publications, John works hard to promote Canadian boating, create great content, provide mentorship, and bring great enthusiasm to our company. He is truly a significant part of our team. We appreciate you, John. Thank you for all that you do!
Enjoy your Boating Equipment News for June 2023.

Our 2023 CTL Guide to Boat Guests will assist you in preparing the welcome and battening down the hatches. Lovers at sea
|
This is the story of two lovers who, in long-gone times, might have been referred to as ‘star-crossed’. Today, thanks to GPS and modern navigational technology, they were able to find their way through a stormy sea of foggy opinion. Here’s how it happened… On a warm summer evening, two boats entered Verona Harbour, a charming sheltered retreat midway between Victoria and Cornerbrook.

The goat in my boat - an open mind when it comes to alternate energy sources.
|
When you look at the classic paddle-wheeler, we can see that in years gone by the marine community better understood alternate fuels and green energy. Just like the paddlewheel powering a Victorian gristmill, the water turns the paddle wheel, which in turn drives the power plant of the boat and pushes the boat forward. Brilliant. I see the skeptics among you already...

Sizzler: the answer to the question
|
This time, we are literally crossing the line; we are exploring a sailboat for powerboaters Is it possible, desirable, or sensible to build a sailboat for a powerboater? That’s why we are gathered here today and it’s also why I got on the blower with Tony Castro, the Southampton naval architect who dreamed up this sweetie and managed its manufacture. The evidence...

New knots for a new world
|
As a boater, I am confident you get the perennial query, ‘tie some knots for me.’ Kids of all ages, beautiful people in bars and even other seasoned boaters, venerate the boating person who can quickly zip a bowline with one hand or flip a series of half hitches onto a cleat. But times change and today, in this wacky environment where everything is constantly...

How AI makes boating easy
|
Your voice is hoarse from talking on the radio; watching the wakeboarders bounce for hours is exhausting. Chatting with ‘randos’ on the dock takes away valuable beer time. Isn’t there a better solution? You’ve heard that AI paired Drake with The Weeknd for a hugely successful hit. You know half the college students in the country rely on ChatGTP for...

Boating is great for Sex Drive
|
A note to readers - Behind the scenes at CTL. In a small corner on the 31st floor of the CY Media Tower in downtown Midland Ontario, the Crossing the Line Team works tirelessly in well-deserved obscurity. We felt this was an opportunity for our audience to get to know these ne'ers-do-well who bring so much to the pages of this otherwise fine magazine...

The people who invented boating technology – part 8
|
It’s fall. As the Canadian Boater University gets back to classes, we can share some of the courses that acknowledge achievements by boating’s great technical innovators over the years. Tool Selection 201: In year one of this critical course for all boaters, the material focused on oil filter removal tools and clean-up techniques. In the lab, it became immediately...

Boating’s Cultural Advantage
|
For two-plus years, most Canadians stayed inside and atrophied. It was sad. The world stopped, most folks sat in masks and watched game shows until their minds turned to mush. Perhaps we isolated too long, but no matter what, most everything was put on hold. But not boaters. With attention to restrictions, distancing sailors and powerboaters alike were able to use their boats...

Spring on E Dock
|
Do we have to wear a mask? What are you, a trucker? Well, go ahead, sand the anti-foul off your hull without one. We have a sale on used lungs!! Hahaha, an E-Zinger… The folks on E are back at it with more demented zeal than ever as lockdowns un-lock. “I didn’t even know we had an E Dock, the Harbourmaster sneered. Those guys are cretins!” Every club and many marinas have...

The definitive boaters’ watch
|
Everyone wants one, no one knows quite why. Now there’s no need to guess; this is the watch for every boat person. Check these indispensable features: A - Tunes. What use is a piece of boat equipment that doesn’t incorporate music? However, for size reasons this one only contains a single song – for this year’s holiday season, that’s Mariah Carey. Enjoy. B- Flare...

The very off season
|
You’re probably wondering how this winter is going to work out. Yes, there are charter destinations available and sunny climes with boats, but are we going to be able to get there? If not, I have compiled a list of pastimes that will keep you occupied during the season when you would be off on a different boat adventure. Knitting - Most boaters are not strangers...
