Lighting with intelligence
The long Thanksgiving weekend often rhymes with outdoor walks to admire the autumn colours and the light that only belongs to this season. This uniqueness reminds me of the other one that is also found today in new lighting installations whether in a museum, a temple or a business. We have long since moved beyond the stage of too white or too bright lighting. However, their effectiveness has sometimes led to overuse of light and the problems associated with this overuse. Hence the intelligence in the title of this commentary. Virtually or on site, don't miss LightFair in a few days to meet all these new technologies that allow us to recreate universes with intelligence. Good reading! |

Indigenous Themes Conveyed Through Illumination at First Nations Resort
By Katherine Routhier
Whitecap Dakota First Nation has created a destination resort like no other in Saskatchewan (Canada). Dakota Dunes Resort is a self-funded project showcasing Indigenous themes and creating unique cultural experiences for its visitors and guests. Completed during the height of the pandemic, the 155-room hotel and conference center is the final piece of a hospitality complex that includes a casino and golf course. The overall motif explores the Indigenous themes of Fire, Water, Earth, and Air, each of which is represented in a specific area of the hotel. In the early stages of the project, the intent was to design and produce custom lighting fixtures. However, the pandemic created various challenges concerning availability, so the aodbt team collaborated with Titan Electrical Group Inc. to re-imagine the lighting. Eureka Lighting luminaires were selected for several areas of the hotel. Read More |

The Virucidal Effects of 405 nm Visible Light on SARS-CoV-2 and Influenza A Virus
By Raveen Rathnasinghe, Sonia Jangra, Lisa Miorin, Michael Schotsaert, Clifford Yahnke and Adolfo Garcia-Sastre
The germicidal potential of specific wavelengths within the electromagnetic spectrum is an area of growing interest. While ultra-violet (UV) based technologies have shown satisfactory virucidal potential, the photo-toxicity in humans coupled with UV associated polymer degradation limit their use in occupied spaces. Alternatively, longer wavelengths with less irradiation energy such as visible light (405 nm) have largely been explored in the context of bactericidal and fungicidal applications. Such studies indicated that 405 nm mediated inactivation is caused by the absorbance of porphyrins within the organism creating reactive oxygen species which result in free radical damage to its DNA and disruption of cellular functions.
