Ten Hove and Millen Top Canadians at the 49er European Championships

Ali ten Hove (Kingston, ON) and Mariah Millen (Toronto, ON) were the top Canadian team in the 49erFX class with a 7th-place finish at the 2022 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 European Championships that ended Sunday in Aarhus, Denmark.

Over the 15 races that were held throughout the competition, the Tokyo 2020 Olympians finished nine times in the top 10, including eight times in their last nine races. In Sunday’s Medal Race, they finished fifth to climb one spot and end up in 7th position. Ten Hove and Millen gained ground in the overall rankings after each day of racing, taking the 32nd, 26th, 19th, 9th and 8th spots, respectively, before moving up to 7th place on Sunday.

Martina Grael and Kahena Kunze from Brazil, the gold medalists at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, won the gold medal in the 49erFX category, in which 70 teams took part. They were followed by Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz from the Netherlands, and by Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler from Sweden. The other Canadian team in action in the 49erFX class, Antonia and Georgia Lewin-LaFrance from Chester, N.S., finished 22nd.

In the 49er class, Arie Moffat (Kingston, ON) and Samuel Bonin (Toronto, ON) were the top Canadians among the country’s four teams in action with a 42nd-place finish out of a total of 93 teams, including a win in race #9.

The 2022 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 European Championships were the last major regatta involving these Olympic classes to be held ahead of the 2022 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships which are slated to take place in Canada, in St. Margaret’s Bay, N.S., from August 31 to September 5.
