Changes to the Marine Safety Fees Regulations (Vessel Registry Fees)

Transport Canada is now introducing amendments to the Marine Safety Fees Regulations in order to modernize vessel registry fees. These changes came into effect April 1st, 2024.


Why are the fees increasing?
·         Fees are increasing to better reflect the cost of providing services.
·         Ensures that Transport Canada’s services are sustainably funded and efficiently delivered.
·         To balance the financial burden of the vessel registry program’s costs between those who use the services and the Canadian public.


Key Provisions in the Regulations
The amendments to the regulations will modernize TC’s vessel registry fees by:
·         Increasing fees for some services to better reflect the costs of providing services
·         Introducing fees for some services that are currently provided at no cost
·         Lowering and removing some fees
·         Requiring clients to pay a fee to renew their large vessel registrations
·         Adding fees for the renewal for Large Vessel Registry, now every 5 years
·         Adjusting fees annually based on the Consumer Price Index


Who does this apply to?
This applies to Canadian Vessel Owners.

Where can I find a list of updated fees?
·         You can view the updated fees in the Canada Gazette, Part II: Vol 158. https://canadagazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2024/2024-02-28/html/sor-dors29-eng.html

·         On April 01, 2024, Vessel Registry Fees Tariff will be repealed, and the Regulations Amending the Marine Safety Fees Regulations will come into force
·         The fees will also be available on the Transport Canada online payment page for Small Vessel Registry https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Comm/5/MVR/eng/small-vessel-register/order and Large Vessel Registry starting April 1st, 2024
