Watch the Candela C-7 foiling boat fly over the waves

Candela Foiling Electric Boat

Aug 2, 2022

Boating Industry Canada News Week Digest has a reciprocal arrangement with BoatTest.com to share editorial and recently, BoatTest founder Jeff Hammond went to Sweden and visited the Candela boat plant to actually experience their C-7 model and to shoot a video.

Because air is 784 times less dense than water, the fluid through which a boat’s hull must travel requires a tremendous amount of energy. Therefore, conventional boats with the equivalent of a Tesla’s batteries aboard have a range that is a fraction of the automobile’s. For that reason, Candela has engineered a foiling powerboat. By lifting the hull out of the water on foils, thus greatly reducing drag, Candela is able to significantly extend the boat’s range on a given battery charge. This video explains the history of foiling powerboats and tests the energy consumption of the Candela C-7 at several operating speeds.
