Global standards development organizations (SDOs) CSA Group and Underwriters Laboratories are pleased to announce the signing of a collaborative memorandum of understanding (MOU).

The memorandum expresses the intention of CSA Group and Underwriters Laboratories to collaborate in undertaking their respective accredited standards development activities where doing so strengthens public safety, health, or the environment, supports economic efficiency, and promotes clarity and consistency for users of standards and the general public.

Under the terms of the MOU, both organizations agree to promote reciprocal communication, facilitate stakeholder participation in education and awareness raising, and identify and undertake joint initiatives and opportunities to collaborate in areas where both organizations see the social value in doing so.

Underwriters Laboratories is dedicated to the UL mission of working for a safer world. The organization pursues this mission in partnership with many other stakeholders, technical experts and SDOs to develop safety science research and standards through the advancement of programs that drive safety, security and sustainability.

For more than a century, CSA Group has relentlessly led the drive for a better, safer, more sustainable world. Today, CSA Group achieves this vision through standards development, supported by technical research and training. The mission of CSA Group’s Standard Development organization is to enhance the lives of Canadians through the advancement of standards in the public and private sectors. The technical and management standards developed by the organization’s 10,000 members improve safety, health, the environment and economic efficiency in Canada and beyond.

“Standards are essential to public safety and confidence, as they help to improve the quality of products and services in the marketplace.” said Phil Piqueira, vice president of global standards at Underwriters Laboratories. “This memorandum of understanding between Underwriters Laboratories and CSA Group is a natural extension of our common mission and commitment to meeting the safety needs of our various stakeholders. We are confident that our combined efforts will make a significant impact in advancing our shared public safety missions.”

“CSA Group and Underwriters Laboratories are driven by missions to support and improve health, safety and economic efficiency in Canada and the U.S. through standards development and research,” said Mary Cianchetti, President of Standards, CSA Group. “This memorandum provides a framework for our two organizations to collaboratively and constructively tackle topics that benefit stakeholders in our markets, and an opportunity to jointly develop relevant bi-national and harmonized standards.”

The memorandum was signed by both organizations during a virtual ceremony.
