New Research Released on Smart Home Energy Management Systems

July 17, 2023

Engaging with early adopters and energyconscious customers can help smart home energy management systems (SHEMS) vendors deliver valuable solutions to homeowners while promoting a more sustainable future.

This is one of many research-based recommendations offered to industry players in a landmark research report on
the evolving SHEMS landscape from the Continental Automated Buildings Association (CABA). The “Smart Home
Energy Management” research report guides stakeholders poised to capitalize on growth opportunities in a rapidly growing sector through strategies tailored to specific provider types and addressing aspects such as EV ownership, integration, renewables, and AI.

The 135-page Smart Home Energy Management Systems Report helps companies encourage adoption by offering:

  • A thorough examination of the prevailing trends and forces influencing energy consumption and the adoption of SHEMS products and services
  • An extensive survey of over 500 homeowners in the US and Canada to gain insight into SHEMS awareness and adoption drivers and barriers
  • An overview of the most effective strategies and approaches to drive success used by smart home technology suppliers.

“The proliferation of devices, widespread connectivity, and the need to reduce energy use and carbon footprint are all fueling homeowners’ adoption of SHEMS,” says CABA Board Chair Brian Ensign of Superior Essex Communications. “This timely insight will help suppliers respond strategically to an evolving ecosystem while helping homeowners better manage their energy use.”

Carried out between December 2022 and January 2023 by Harbour Research and the CABA Steering Committee, this research was funded by CABA members Broan-NuTone LLC, Honda Environmental Business Development Office, Resideo Technologies Inc, Rheem Manufacturing Company, Snap One LLC, and Thread Group.

“Widespread collaboration among key stakeholders like utilities, tech providers, and construction companies will be crucial to carrying the SHEMS industry forward,” says CABA CEO Greg Walker. “This report offers the kind of reliable, in-depth, third-party quantitative and qualitative information needed to keep us all on the same page as we drive innovation, ensure interoperability, and create value.”

The full $70,000 (USD) research project is currently only available to the funding organizations and will be available to the public for purchase in the CABA Shop following a four-month embargo period.
