The Edmonton Yacht Club at Lake Wabamun has a long and storied history of bringing together captains and commodores to harness the power of the wind. It’s one of a few clubs in the province. The club’s history on its website is here www.edmontonyachtclub.ca/overview. On Canada Day it celebrated the 100th Anniversary with events on and off the water.

The Edmonton Yacht Club is a not-for-profit, volunteer community, committed to the sport of sailing and operating a clubhouse and docking facilities in Seba Beach, near Edmonton. Since the Club was formed in 1923, it has become one of western Canada’s Premier Facilities. EYC membership has rostered many casual sailors as well as those who have gone on to compete in regattas around the world.

Notable is Lawrence Lemieux who started as a young sailor at the EYC and competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in the Star class and at the 1988 Summer Olympics in the Finn class. He is famous for his life-saving actions in the latter competition, which resulted in him being awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal.

The CBC did an excellent mini doc on the club celebrating its centenary.
