HPS dVdT Filter Research Accepted in IEEE

“Comprehensive Study of DVDT Filter for Motor Drive System with Long Cable Lead,” published at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

Haider Razak, HPS Principal Engineer in Power Quality and Power Conversion Solutions, alongside Manish Saraf, VP Design Engineering have had their paper, “Comprehensive Study of DVDT Filter for Motor Drive System with Long Cable Lead,” published at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Energy Conversion Conference and Expo (ECCE). This research addresses the significant challenges faced by motor drive systems in industrial applications with long cable leads.

The comprehensive study delves into the nuanced issues associated with motor drive systems operating in environments with extended cable leads. The article not only identifies the challenges faced by motor drive systems but also provides a practical solution that can be implemented across various industrial applications. The authors have examined the performance under different operating conditions and system parameters such as motor loading, motor speed, cable length, cable size, cable type, switching frequency, and the mode of operation. The findings have the potential to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of motor drive systems operating with long cable leads.

Abstract:

This paper provides an in-depth analysis of the issues and challenges of motor drive systems in industrial application with long cable lead. Moreover, it presents a simple and economical filtering solution to these challenges under different system parameters and operating conditions. The system parameters include cable length, cable size, cable type, and drive system size. The operating conditions include switching frequency, output operating frequency, and loading condition. The motor peak voltage, which is the main concern in such applications, is investigated along with the power dissipation of the filter.

Testing with three motor drive systems (10, 25 and 100HP) with different cable lengths (500-1500ft), different cable sizes (#8, #2, 4/O), and different cable types (VFD, TECK) are used to experimentally validate the design and analysis of this paper.

New Hammond Power Solutions Centurion D1 dVdT Filter

Hammond Power Solutions (HPS) has a new addition to their line of power quality products – HPS Centurion D1 dVdT Filter. The HPS Centurion D1 is designed for use between variable frequency drives (VFD’s) and motors when long lead lengths are used. It combines an inductor and parallel resistor network to mitigate both high frequency components and voltage spikes between the VFD and motor.

These filters provide protection for both the motor and cables that power it, and are typically used when the cable length exceeds a value that can lead to high voltage levels caused by reflected wave phenomena. dVdT filters provide protection to the motor by slowing down the rate of voltage increase and minimizes the damaging peak voltages that occur within the motor’s windings and terminals.
