Should LEDs Have a Warning Label?
According to the nearly 250 scientists surveyed by Circadian Light Research Center for its newly released study Lights Should Support Circadian Rhythms: Evidence-Based Scientific Consensus, repetitive and prolonged exposure to light at night bright enough to cause circadian disruption increases the risk of breast cancer in women, increases the risk of obesity and diabetes, and increases the risk of sleep disorders. Those findings led the surveyed scientists to propose having a warning label on LED lights with high 460-495nm blue content that reads “may be harmful if used at night.”
Obviously the last thing the lighting industry needs is a warning label that might slow end-user adoption if not understood correctly, but these scientific findings should not be ignored. The wellness industry – not to mention the sleep disorder industry – translates to trillions of dollars in consumer spending. There are two articles in this newsletter related to circadian lighting (one details the aforementioned report and the other is regarding an upcoming IES webinar on circadian lighting). I encourage you to read them to increase your familiarity with these concerns so that you can expertly answer any customer/client questions on upcoming projects or purchases.
