What Do Mike Tyson & Insteon Have in Common?
Answer: Both have given black eyes to the public last week. In the Mike Tyson incident, the former heavyweight champ pummeled a fellow passenger in the face during a Jet Blue flight from San Francisco to Florida. In Insteon’s case, it was consumers who had installed Insteon’s smart home systems who were on the receiving end of a virtual black eye as their control networks were shut down suddenly and permanently without explanation or warning.
Insteon’s abrupt closure did more than hurt its customers, however. It has shaken the confidence of anyone who had been on the verge of installing or spec’ing a smart system in a home or commercial facility. A few days ago, I spoke with Perry Fox – co-founder of Olibra, the manufacturer of the Bond Bridge, Bond Bridge Pro, and the Smart by Bond IoT platform – about the Insteon debacle as well as safeguards that his company has put into place to survive unforeseen disaster. Look for that interview in our next edition.
