The Best-Laid Plans
As smart lighting systems begin to take hold, the term “future-proofing” is heard during product launches — but how many years equal the estimated “future” and what about the other aspects of “future-proofing” that aren’t taken into account, such as the longevity of a company?
These concerns came together in a perfect storm when news broke last week about a Massachusetts high school with a smart lighting system that had gone awry. Installed nine years ago, the system was considered state-of-the-art with daylight harvesting to reduce energy consumption. Then suddenly in 2021, the software suffered a permanent glitch that caused all 7,000 lights to turn on at 100 percent with no way to turn them off except for throwing breakers or unscrewing light bulbs. Since then, the lights have remained on all day and night for a year and a half and counting.
The problem stemmed from proprietary software developed by a company that had changed hands multiple times and no longer had staff familiar with the project. Ultimately, a solution is expected next month, but the scenario serves as a cautionary tale of what can go wrong with smart lighting systems down the road. Details on the high school project can be found in this newsletter; in the meantime, the lighting community needs to troubleshoot all aspects of “future-proofing” or risk customer confidence in trying innovative lighting solutions that can move the industry forward. |
