Publisher’s Message for July 2023
Like clockwork, BEN has arrived in your inbox to share some of our favourite boating stories again.
You may have noticed that the content in the past few BEN issues has not been all Boating Equipment, as the name suggests. That is because we have so much great content that we want to ensure that our readers have the opportunity to see it if you missed it previously. So, the structure of this monthly digest has become a ‘round-up’ of great boating content. We plan to formalize this change in the upcoming months. BEN will take on a new name that is better suited, but we have a bigger announcement that we must make first. That announcement is one you want to be sure that you are watching for because it is BIG. It is exciting and we think that you will likely be surprised and agreeable. We can’t wait to share this news!
In this issue of BEN, enjoy 6 new power and 6 new sail reviews from the past year of CY Magazine. Did you know that CY has boat reviews that date back to the ‘70’s to present? View the full archive here and for your reading pleasure you can also enjoy a look at all of our digital magazines for free, here, in our archives.
Enjoy your Boating Equipment News for July 2023.

Cruisers Yachts 50 Cantius – Volvo Penta Assisted Docking
|
The Cruisers Yachts 50 Cantius was actually reviewed in Canadian Yachting a few years ago when this model was first launched but we are back for a fresh look because our test boat was equipped with the new Volvo Penta Assisted Docking system and it makes the Cantius even better than before. Undoubtedly, a big factor in the success that Cruisers Yachts has had with their entire Cantius line of yachts...

Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 60
|
Beneteau has introduced a new flagship in their Oceanis Yachts line – the French builder’s category of hulls which are 54 feet and longer. The Oceanis Yacht 60, which is the larger sibling to the only other model in the line, the Oceanis Yacht 54, is a Biscontini-designed hull that replaces the previous 62 and is an evolution of the Beneteau’s direction over the past few years. The Oceanis 60 has a lower...

Can a pontoon boat fly?
|
By Andy Adams - In my role as Managing Editor of Canadian Yachting magazine, I see both power and sailboats, from small to grand, and I also watch the development of cutting-edge SailGP and America’s Cup boats with interest and amazement. These are the pinnacle of racing development and they sail at 50-knot speeds on outrageous foil appendages. The performance is stunning, but I could...

Dufour 37
|
Every few years, boat builders update their lines with refreshed designs and new features that eventually proliferate throughout their entire offering. Dufour Yachts is in mid-process of such an evolution as the builder changes up their line of sleek sailing cruisers. One sign of this transformation is the naming convention that is morphing from triple-digit numbers ending with a zero, to simple double...

SAXDOR 200 Sport Mercury 150
|
By Andy Adams - Canadian Yachting magazine was excited to get our first opportunity to run the Saxdor 200 Sport - a very new and different sport activity boat from Europe. The lines are different, the hull and running surface are different and the design is clearly from an “out-of-the-box” thinker. Saxdor was founded in 2019 by legendary Finnish designer, Sakari Mattila. Saxdor quickly...

J/9: The Ultimate Day Sailor
|
When J/Boats set out to make their latest model, their thinking moved away from a boat that you had to tweak all the time, worry about having enough sandwiches to feed the crew, ensuring that you had big strong lads to do the heavy lifting and making certain that you had new sails for the big regattas. Although the J/9 is not a sport boat, it is designed like any other J/Boat for sailing first...

Regal LS36 Luxury Crossover
|
By Andy Adams - Regal Boats’ new LS36 is what we call a day boat. Regal says the LS36 merges their luxury yacht series with their bowrider series and the result is the LS36. This comfortable bowrider is perfect for cruising the lake or hosting friends and family for the day on the weekend. We feel the styling deserves mention right off the top. This is a big boat at over 37-feet on an 11’7” beam but the...

Beneteau Oceanis 34.1
|
By Zuzana Prochazka - Boats have been in high demand for the past two years and there’s no sign of this easing. Sailboats, that can move with the power of the wind, have made an especially significant comeback probably because of the high prices of fuel. Even more interesting is the increased interest in smaller models that have been doing well at recent boat shows. These compact cruisers...

Parker Poland 800 Weekend
|
By Andy Adams - We are excited to bring you this review of the new Parker Poland 800 Weekend. It is a 25-foot cabin cruiser with a 9‘6“ beam which provides the boat with absolutely amazing space given its length. With a single Yamaha F300, 300 horsepower V6 outboard, the boat proved to be nimble, quiet and economical to operate. Parker Poland is very good at maximizing the features...

A Tale of Two Kitties
|
By Richard Mitchele - Catamarans are cool. In 1876, Nat Herreshoff, the renown yacht designer, built Amaryllis, a catamaran based on pictures he had seen of Polynesian sailing cats. He crushed it in his first regatta and won by a landslide against the traditional monohulls known as sandbaggers because they shifted bags of sand from side to side as ballast. In short order the gentlemen in...

Wellcraft 355 – Triple Mercury Verado 350: Built to push limits
|
By Andy Adams - Wellcraft launched a legacy of offshore boats from Sarasota, Florida more than 60 years ago and since then, high-performance deep vee designs have been their constant. Styles and purposes evolved over time with saltwater fishing as a major theme, but offshore ocean racing was what many came to associate with the Wellcraft brand, especially after...

Fountaine Pajot Tanna 47
|
By Zuzana Prochazka - Catamarans in the mid-40-foot range have become wildly popular. This is the sweet spot for both cruisers and charterers and many companies have rushed to gain traction in this lucrative segment. French builder Fountaine Pajot already has a leg up in this space with their 42-, 45- and 47-foot models but, knowing that the competition is fierce, they...
