Update
Yes, Halifax is Hosting a SailGP Event in June
Thanks to the Sail NS team and various organizations in the area – Province of Nova Scotia, Halifax Regional Municipality, Build Nova Scotia, Discover Halifax, and the Port of Halifax – plus the sponsorship of ROCKWOOL, the first ever Canadian SailGP event will take place June 1-2, 2024. It’s a surprise to many Canadian sailors but less of a surprise to Frank Dennis, the executive director of Sail NS who has been working around the clock to make this happen for 18 months. In a recent interview, Frank told us that sailing has much more currency in Nova Scotia than almost anywhere else in Canada.

Gear Buster Delays Canada’s Scott Shawyer Start in TJV
Storm Ciaran is set to sweep across the north-west quarter of France, during Wednesday night. It is this huge system which has required the 40 strong IMOCA fleet that was set to start the Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie Le Havre on Sunday tied to the dock in Le Havre. It looks set to be an exceptional storm with winds of over 80-90kts off the coast. Sunday’s scheduled start for the Transat Jacques Vabre – the double-handed race across the Atlantic from Le Havre to Martinique – partially got away.

Yet another page has been written for the Premier International Masters sailing event, in San Diego providing me with yet another amazing opportunity to reconnect and share sailing stories with many of my old friends, dating back as far as the Olympics in Pusan, Korea in 1988. Congratulations to all the teams for attending but especially to the winning team skippered by hometown favorite, Scott Harris, the second-place finisher, Tad Lacey, and the third-place finisher, Cory Sertl.

Race Report
LOSHRS Dalhousie Weekend 2023
The LOSHRS Dalhousie Weekend last month – Races Five and Six of the season – is always fun and often delivers nail-biters. The final season results, and overall season championships are often determined this weekend. Calculators are out with crews figuring out what they must do to podium on the season. Who do they have to cover… who do they have to beat? The weather gods didn’t look like they were going to smile this weekend. Light, changing winds were promised leaving us wondering when we were going to finish. Winds on the way over were better than expected strength-wise but they were quite changeable.

A Sailmaker's Fall Haulout List
I’m going to let you all in on my secret fall sailboat maintenance list. This is the time to get prepared for Spring launch, and you won’t be waiting for sail repairs, delivery of new sails, new impellers or replacement anodes. 1 – Check your cradle, stands or trailer. Grease the threads on the pads, check the waterproof carpet and keel block. Wheel bearing grease, check the lights, tires. This year I got some new tires mounted and installed a month before haulout thanks to my friendly mechanic Matt.

Sportsmanship Part 1
Good sportsmanship might be much more evident in racing if winning didn’t seem so important. Without the expectation and pressure to perform at a high level over and over, competitors would be much more relaxed. They could devote a lot more time and energy to the many other reasons why most people race sailboats – to have fun, make friends, enjoy the outdoors, keep learning and to see improvement in their sailing skills. But the reality is that winning is important. It’s the object of every sailboat race and the goal of most sailors who strive to be the best they can be.
