Sailor’s Day at the Toronto International Boat Show
Last Saturday (Jan 27) the 2024 Toronto International Boat Show marked the first year for Sailor’s Day at the Enercare Centre. The day was held in ‘Sailfest’, where many types of boats were on display including monohulls, Hobie’s, WASZPs, kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foiling and more. There was apparel, gear, water toys and many booths lining the walls full of information of all things sailing. Reversing the trend. It has been noticeable that the sail footprint of the Toronto boat show has been reduced in the past several years. The idea for Sailor’s Day came from Alex Byczko.

North Introduces NPL RENEW – Sustainable Sailcloth
Last week at the Dusseldorf boat show and simultaneously around the world including in Canada, North Sails launched RENEW, a North Panel Laminate (NPL) sailcloth for cruising boats 25 to 45 ft. RENEW sailcloth is constructed from more than 90% sustainable sources, with no sacrifice in performance or longevity. North Sails is equally committed to finding solutions for sustainable sails, low-impact manufacturing, the use of alternative fibres, and opportunities for material circularity. The launch of RENEW sailcloth therefore marks an important shift towards building more sustainable sails with the best materials.

Dave's 2024 Webinars
Here are dates and topics for three new webinar series I’ll be running this winter and spring. As you can see below, these webinars will cover a wide range of critical and useful topics. In ‘Lessons From Above’ we’ll analyze a bunch of aerial videos taken by drones to see what worked (and didn’t work!) for a variety of boat types and racing situations. ‘Clashing Priorities’ will be an in-depth comparison and explanation of what your racing priorities should be across four key dimensions of sailboat racing. And ‘Top 50 Tips’ will include all my favourite (and most valuable) nuggets of advice for sailing fast and smart around...

Kelley Poole Earns Top Spot in ILCA 7
Royal Victoria Yacht Club member, Kelley Poole, has accomplished a milestone in the ILCA class by winning a regional Grand Prix, specifically the ILCA 7 North American Grand Prix! A huge congratulations to this fine sailor who has been dutifully collecting points across North America over the 2023 season. Highlights are 3rd at Midwinters West, 5th at North Americans, and 9th at Canadians to name a few. Kelley is an U21 sailor beating out many more seasoned sailors in this continental championship (optimal sailor weight is 180 pounds – Kelley is 150 at 20 years old).

Duck or Tack? Navigating Crossing Situations
Imagine being on port tack, unsure if you can safely cross a starboard tacker. Many ducks go awry due to sailors waiting too long, attempting a last-minute cross, resulting in a sharp turn that disrupts crew coordination and slows down the boat. This not only slows you down, but it costs you progress to windward; and the last-minute duck greatly adds to the risk of a collision – especially between rigs. An early duck allows you to bear away more gently, starting from three to four boat lengths away while the main and genoa sheets get eased. This also gives your main trimmer time to get the sheet out of the cleat and ready in case a gust hits.

The Rules Guy
After You Cross the Finishing Line
I had the opportunity to spend a weekend with 60 University sailors from ten different Universities who were racing the Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Association (CICSA) Team Racing championships. Team racing is fun part of the sport and a great way to exercise a lot of rules in a short time. There were 40 races over two days. I have previously wrote about how to finish when the marks aren’t quite where you expect them to be. Now I would like to discuss what happens after your cross the line. Some of the situations in this article and the next one occurred over the weekend.

Electric Outboards for Sailors
Sailors replacing transom-mounted propulsion are increasingly opting for clean, quiet, eco-friendly Elco EP-series outboards. Providing the horsepower comparable to a 2- or 4-stroke gasoline engine, they can extend the serenity of sailing to even motoring in and out of a harbour. Having sufficient power to get back to the dock when becalmed or before a front moves in is often a concern for sailors. Elco outboards deliver over 90% efficiency and an impressive thrust ratio. Combined with an extensive range, they provide sailors with the peace of mind that a safe haven is always quickly within reach.
