EV Charging, Report on Apprentices
In this issue we take a closer look at the EV charger installation blitz ESA conducted earlier this year in Toronto that resulted in over 400 violations. Steve Nelson provides some insight into their process, and we take a look at EV charger considerations. You'll also find another installment from Keith Sones, who has a couple questions for you. Also of note, CAF-FCA has released a report based on a survey of B.C. employers on the value of apprentices. The survey comprised of 21 trades, including construction and industrial electricians. For construction electricians 43 employers were surveyed representing over 1,200 journeypersons and over 600 apprentices. For the industrial side, 63 employers were surveyed representing 465 journeypersons and 132 apprentices. |

A Closer Look at ESA’s EV Charger Installation Blitz & EV Charger Considerations
By Blake Marchand
A key aspect for ESA in this is educating the homeowner about the requirements and implications of different electric vehicles and different levels of chargers. Once people buy an EV, they don’t necessarily know what comes along with that with respect to installing the right charger, ensuring their electrical infrastructure can handle the increased load, as well as who is required to complete the installation. I Have Two Questions for You
By Keith Sones, Valard EVP Strategy & Business Development
I have two questions for you. First, how many people do you think you’ll meet in your life? It’s not that hard to determine, quite frankly. Yes, it requires a lot of assumptions to represent the “average” person, but it is possible. Before giving you the number, I should clarify one thing. When I say “meet”, I’m talking about everyone from the clerk in the grocery store, all those kids on your first day of school and your neighbours to the bystander who helped pull your car out of the ditch on that snowy afternoon. Finding Balance: The Role of Balance of System in Delivering More Efficient and Cost-Effective PV Installations
Over the past decade, the story of utility-scale solar has been one of increasing energy efficiency and decreasing costs. But as photovoltaic (PV) technology matures, these gains are seeing diminishing returns. There have been huge leaps in technology and drops in cost across the entire solar balance of system (BOS), not just in panels and inverters. |
BOS typically encompasses everything but the solar panel module itself: inverters, racking and trackers, cable management, batteries, and storage, even software and labor costs. Underlying and tying together all these systems is a solar plant’s physical and electrical infrastructure.
Going forward, BOS will play a larger role in increasing the performance and minimizing the cost of commercial-scale PV installations.
While there is plenty of room for individual improvements in solar infrastructure, examining BOS, as a whole, can help uncover opportunities. Physical and electrical infrastructure connects and underpins the entirety of any solar installation and is an ideal lens through which to approach BOS. Learn More...

More Small-Scale, Multi-Unit Homes Coming to B.C., Zoning Barriers Removed
B.C. is introducing new housing legislation to deliver more small-scale, multi-unit housing for people, including townhomes, triplexes and laneway homes, and fix outdated zoning rules to help build more homes faster. Historical zoning rules in many B.C. communities have led most new housing to be built mostly in the form of condos, or single-family homes that are out of reach for many people, leaving a shortage of options for the types of housing in between.
