Message From The Editor
Joy to all
Looking at the editor’s note from last year, I see I wrote “it can only get better”. At this point, I am not so confident in my year end prediction acumen, but as we roll into the (constrained) holiday season and on to a new year it’s time to be optimistic.
Alas, some in-person shows have fallen victim to Omicron while others are, so far, going ahead as planned. Perhaps we are best off to look ahead to the spring and the excitement of launch.

Electric outboards rule Part II
Two years of COVID-19-pent-up marine-product introductions burst forth on the world’s largest marine-equipment stage — METSTRADE — two weeks ago in Amsterdam. Most significant were TEN electric outboard motors with stated horsepower from 1 to 267. None of the electric motors on display was from Canada or the US; as you might expect in Holland European electrical engineers and entrepreneurs dominated the show.

Ask Andrew
What is the right battery type?
Most of us are familiar with the tried-and-true 12V lead-acid batteries that have been found in marine and auto applications for decades. There have been advances over time in the current output, the amp-hours and sizes available; no one can doubt that they do the job well. So why re-invent the wheel? Why confuse a proven technology with other types of batteries?

Keven Talks Sails
Do you need a Spinnaker for cruising?
Do you really need a spinnaker for your cruising sailboat? Probably not, unless you are prepared to put it up some of the time. Half of cruising customers will never sail with a spinnaker, and that is fine. Spinnakers haven’t really been around nearly as long as mainsails and jibs, and really good asymmetric spinnaker designs have only been around for the last 25 years.
